This course is designed to prepare you for applying to one of our pre-registration courses, giving you knowledge and understanding of a broad range of health-related topics and professional skills.
Course Details
Year 1 Core Modules
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Gain a basic knowledge of human body structure and relate this knowledge to both the understanding of the mechanisms associated with the control and regulation of physiological processes of the major organs systems of the body.
- Application of Health Sciences
- Study the breadth of health science, clinical and non-clinical support services within the National Health Service in the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care.
- Biochemistry and Chemical Science
- Develop an understanding of key concepts necessary to underpin subsequent studies in chemistry, biochemistry, biomedical sciences and molecular biology.
- Cell Biology
- Increase your understanding of biological processes at the cellular level.
- Microbiology
- Explore microscopic organisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa.
- Pathology
- Gain an overview of normal histology and cytology of major organs and systems of the human body and molecular and cellular factors underpinning the pathology of common diseases.
How You Learn
- Practical work (lab and field-based) and other forms of experiential learning to develop knowledge, understanding and skills essential to a biological sciences graduate.
- Virtual learning environment (VLE) support.
How You Are Assessed
- Written exams (formal exams including 'unseen' and ‘seen’ exams with a range of question types/tasks)
- Coursework (including essays, reports, practical work reports, computer-based assessments, the creation of online resources, work-based assessments, work placement reports and independent research dissertations based on capstone projects)
- Practical exams (oral presentations and assessments of practical skills or competence)
Entry Requirements
- 96-112 UCAS tariff points
- GCSE English and Mathematics at grade 4 (grade C) or equivalent
- Studied at least one relevant subject at Level 3 (e.g., Applied Science, Biology, Health Sciences)
- Alternative equivalent UK and international qualifications and subjects are also considered.
