What You Study

  • Introduction to medical technologies in health care:
    • general principles
    • applied anatomy in relation to diseases and technologies
    • diagnosis and monitoring of conditions
    • impact on treatment
    • assessment of treatment
  • Surgical interventions:
    • type of surgical treatment
    • minimally invasive surgery
    • patient management and follow-up
  • Assessment of patient outcomes:
    • sensitivity, specificity and accuracy
    • patient reported outcome measures (PROM)
    • Economic costs
  • Assessment of literature:
    • quality frameworks for assessing medical imaging literature
    • quality frameworks for assessing economic evaluations
    • critical appraisal tools and how to use them

How You Learn

The course runs for 12 weeks using a blended learning approach, with a one week block of on-campus teaching. This block will include five days of six hours a day (9.00am - 12.00pm, 1.00pm - 4.00pm) delivered as a mixture of lecturers, group work seminars, and practicals or lab sessions. The remaining study is online.


How You Are Assessed

You are assessed on your ability to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of medical technologies.


Entry Requirements

You must have completed a level five qualification (or higher) and/or developed knowledge and skills in a health or science subject.
