Overview

This award is suitable for those working in a health and/or social care context who wish to acquire knowledge of the underpinning theory of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), fundamental CBT principles and common interventions used for the treatment of depression and anxiety.

What You Study

In addition to gaining a theoretical knowledge, you develop fundamental CBT skills and interventions, which can be used to enhance your clinical practice. The module aims to develop your theoretical and practical understanding of both CBT literature and the practicalities of applying CBT based assessment and interventions to people with depression and / or anxiety. Indicative content for the module includes (and is not limited to): the evolution of CBT, CBT principles, CBT models for depression and anxiety, CBT assessment and formulation, CBT based interventions, study skills and self-reflection.

Teesside University’s Future Facing Learning initiative underpins all of our modules and alongside the main content, the module seeks to equip you with the skills to work collaboratively using the latest technology. Teaching methods include lectures, role play skills rehearsals, tutorials and self-directed learning. Alongside face-to-face sessions, our teaching methods utilise our virtual learning environment (VLE) to provide you with between session reading and activities to enhance your knowledge and understanding.


How You Are Assessed

There are two assessment components: a 20-minute simulated assessment using a CBT framework, and a viva style structured discussion where you answer questions based upon your assessment.


Entry Requirements

You should work in a health and/or social care environment with people who have mild to moderate mental health problems. You will have a sound knowledge of common mental health difficulties and have access to a professional who is eligible to provide clinical supervision relating to the application of CBT interventions.


Employability

If you wish to enhance your understanding of the cognitive behavioural therapeutic skills, this award is suitable for you. You qualify to deliver CBT-based interventions, and gain foundational knowledge and skills, beneficial for future formal CBT training.
