Program Overview


Course overview

This course enables you to develop knowledge and understanding of CBT based treatment interventions for common mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. This includes CBT assessment and formulation, and the application of established CBT interventions such as behavioural activation, graded exposure and cognitive restructuring.

Where you study

The module aims to develop your theoretical and practical understanding of both CBT literature and the practicalities of applying CBT based assessment and interventions to people with depression and / or anxiety.

Indicative content for the module includes (and is not limited to): the evolution of CBT, CBT principles, CBT models for depression and anxiety, CBT assessment and formulation, CBT based interventions, study skills and self-reflection.

What you study

In addition to gaining a theoretical knowledge, you develop fundamental CBT skills and interventions, which can be used to enhance your clinical practice.


How you learn

Teesside University’s Future Facing Learning initiative underpins all of our modules and alongside the main content, the module seeks to equip you with the skills to work collaboratively using the latest technology. Teaching methods include lectures, role play skills rehearsals, tutorials and self-directed learning. Alongside face-to-face sessions, our teaching methods utilise our virtual learning environment (VLE) to provide you with between session reading and activities to enhance your knowledge and understanding.


How you are assessed

There are two assessment components:

> a 20-minute simulated assessment using a CBT framework > a viva style structured discussion where you answer questions based upon your assessment.
