Several awards aimed at people who administer medication are already available; this award is designed for people who are responsible for overseeing the processes involved in the management and administration of medication such as senior employees, for example senior nurses, involved in the management and auditing of medication administration within the public and private health and social care sector.

Where you study

The award is delivered at Stockton Riverside College, one of Teesside University’s partnership colleges. You attend Stockton Riverside College for a weekly 4.5 hour taught session over a period of 10 weeks.

What you study

You gain detailed knowledge and understanding of legislation and policies in relation to managing and administering medicines and the principles involved in medication policy development. Knowledge of CQC professional advice/good practice guidelines national minimum standards and NMC standards for medicines management are also gained. You also explore risk assessment, quality assurance, quality improvement and quality systems.


How you learn

You learn through lectures, group discussion, directed study activities, problem-solving activities using the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and tutorials.

You are assessed by two assignments:

  • Assignment 1 requires you to undertake a medication risk assessment within your area of practice, identifying potential hazards at each stage of the medication process. This is to be supported by a 1,000 word written discussion of possible solutions in relation to the hazards.
  • Assignment 2 is a 2,500 word critique of your current workplace medication policy.
  • You must achieve a pass grade for both assignments.
