Program Overview
Course overview
This new intensive six-week course has been designed to meet the identified skills gaps to accommodate these new cutting-edge technologies. Developed for process operators and technicians that are, or will be, involved in designing hydrogen products, processes or infrastructure, you explore transition to hydrogen; selecting hydrogen systems materials of construction. You learn through lectures and lab sessions in the University’s dedicated Hydrogen lab, where you gain guidance on a selection of materials for hydrogen production, transportation, and storage.
You explore the thermodynamic properties of hydrogen, as well as materials for low, moderate, and higher temperature electrolysis. You discuss several failure mechanisms in detail. You gain insight into the currently used metallic and non-metallic materials in pipe networks and the compatibility of these materials with hydrogen. You also cover the different materials for hydrogen storage at low and high pressures, and conclude with a look at different membrane materials used for the separation of hydrogen.
This is an accredited course so you also gain a University Certificate in Professional Development (UCPD) upon successful completion. Feedback is provided throughout your learning with the final assessment being made up of two parts: a time constrained computer-based quiz and a short technical report.
The course is fully accredited at Level 5 which equates to the second year of a degree and you will receive a University Certificate in Professional Development (UCPD) upon successful completion.
You do not need a degree to take part in this course, but relevant experience is essential.
Throughout the course you will hear from industry partners with relevant case studies and data to provide practical and informative solutions.

Course details
What you study
• Thermodynamics of fluids
• Materials for low, moderate and high temperature electrolysis • Electrolytes for solid oxide fuel cells • Failure mechanisms for hydrogen gas pipelines and vessels • Compatibility of currently used metallic materials with hydrogen • Compatibility of currently used non-metallic materials with hydrogen • Materials for hydrogen storage • Bulk storage of high-pressure gas and low temperature liquids • Membrane materials for separationHow you learn
The course runs for six weeks, Tuesday and Thursday 1.00pm – 5.00pm through blended learning.
You receive up to 60 hours of taught lessons throughout your learning, which is made up of lectures and lab sessions at our Middlesbrough Campus. There is a requirement for self learning as part of the course which is work-based learning. How you are assessed
Assessment involves two elements, with the first part involving a time-limited computer-based assessment through our virtual learning environment.
The second part is in the form of a written report, assessing one of the four experiments undertaken throughout your learning.Employability
Career opportunities
Designed for process operators and technicians that are, or will be, involved in designing hydrogen products, processes or infrastructure; this course upskills you for future promotion or career opportunities.
