Course overview
This includes nurses working in the community, GP practices, out of hours, rapid response and hospital settings who, given the burden of respiratory disease in the NHS, now require more knowledge regarding the conditions of COPD and asthma and how these conditions can be optimally managed in accord with current guidance to improve patient outcomes.
Respiratory knowledge is assessed regarding the care of these conditions with a case log designed in accordance with current guidance and commissioning requirements for respiratory service provision for COPD and asthma.

Course details
What you study
You learn about the respiratory disease trajectories and current evidence supporting the best ways to manage patients with asthma and COPD in the acute and chronic phases of their disease. You learn how respiratory disease is diagnosed, assessed and holistically managed in accord with current consensus guidance.
You also learn how to undertake a clinical history and a case review of a patient with asthma/COPD as well as how to perform the relevant clinical examination and investigations the patient requires, for example cardiopulmonary examination, spirometry analysis and x-ray analysis. Following this you learn how to titrate and monitor the therapeutic regime a patient with asthma and COPD requires to help optimise their clinical state and maintain clinical stability. You explore the patient's response to the illness experience alongside strategies to promote patient empowerment in managing their disease state, with the hope that patients will eventually experience minimal symptoms with maximal improvements in their health and quality of life. This knowledge makes you a more confident practitioner when supporting your patient through their disease trajectory with all this entails for a patient and their family, and in recognising deterioration in their clinical state early to hopefully avoid unnecessary hospital admissions.How you learn
Experiential learning techniques help to build your confidence in respiratory disease diagnostics and holistic therapeutics for your workplace.
Lectures will be delivered face to face and online and will be followed by webinars to support your learning and promote discussion. You will be invited to attend two half day teaching sessions at Teesside University campus, dates to be confirmed. The summative assessment is a 4,000-word case log, comprising two case studies.Employability
Career opportunities
This award helps meet the requirements of nurses or other PAMS involved in the implementation of the current NHS Chronic Disease Agenda and the changes required by the new GMS contract and reduction in hospital doctor’s hours.
Given the burden of respiratory disease for the NHS many roles are developing that require the knowledge of asthma and COPD diagnostics and therapeutics – which this award provides – for example practice nurse or nurse practitioner responsible for chronic disease management within a GP practice, specialist respiratory nurse, respiratory outreach, community matron and respiratory nurse within the acute setting as chronic respiratory disease units develop in acute sector hospitals in the future. In the context of rapid response and out of hours practitioners knowledge of COPD and asthma can promote more effective diagnostic triage capacity especially in the acute phase of the disease.
