Games Development (with Foundation Year) BSc (Hons)

Overview

This course prepares you for a wide range of roles in game development, blending game design with hands-on coding and scripting. You develop the technical and creative skills needed to thrive in the games industry.


Course Details

Foundation Year Core Modules

  • Case Studies: Analytical review of a text within your area of interest.
  • Foundation Game: Create a small game using a contemporary game engine.
  • Non-digital Game Development: Explore theories and methods for game and spatial designs in board games, card games, escape rooms, games of chance, collaborative play, and spaces of outside play.
  • Visual Scripting Principles: Fundamentals of blocking out assets or levels for initial design in a current game engine complemented with visual scripting.

Year 1 Core Modules

  • Game Creation: Skills for game creation using a contemporary game engine.
  • Game Programming Fundamentals: Programming constructs that apply to multiple object-oriented programming languages, focusing on C++.
  • Gameplay Scripting: Apply core scripting concepts to solve practical development problems and build gameplay elements in a modern game engine.
  • Industry Briefs: Work on an individual artefact related to a game experience using a brief set by industry.

Year 2 Core Modules

  • Games Business, Marketing, and Publishing: Examine new trends and business models for games development.
  • Journeyman: Work with students from across all games courses to develop a game slice in a team.
  • Programming for Game Engines: Low-level scripting available in modern game engines.
  • Technical Design: Enhance knowledge of technical game design and development, identifying opportunities in production and gameplay experiences.

Optional Work Placement Year

  • Work Placement: Spend one year in industry learning and developing your skills.

Final-Year Core Modules

  • Advanced Development Techniques: Extend knowledge of modern development techniques and principles commonly used within the games industry.
  • Beta Arcade: Experience working as a member of a games development team, in a setup that is as close to industrial practice as possible.
  • Games Project: Undertake a large-scale project guided by a member of staff, producing a substantial piece of work related to your course alongside a written report.

  • Any combination of level 3 qualifications. Each application is considered on a case-by-case basis.
