Program Overview
Course overview
Offering an opportunity for greater understanding of hydrogen properties and behaviours, this intensive short course has been developed by our experienced academics and industry partners to give you an underpinning knowledge of hydrogen production and its use.
You cover current production methods and how to progress to green sustainable processes. You also learn how hydrogen will replace conventional fossil fuels for transport and heating, hydrogen carriers, comparative calculations for hydrogen versus other fuels as well as an overview of hydrogen related safety, economics and storage.
You learn through lectures that convey the key concepts. Your learning is enhanced though dedicated problem-solving seminars, plus on-campus laboratory sessions in our dedicated Hydrogen lab to provide you with the practical aspects of handling and using hydrogen.
This is an accredited course so you also gain a University Certificate in Professional Development (UCPD) upon successful completion. Feedback is provided throughout your learning with the final assessment being made up of two parts: a time constrained computer-based quiz and a short technical report.
The course is fully accredited at Level 4 which equates to the first year of a degree and you will receive a University Certificate in Professional Development (UCPD) upon successful completion.
You do not need a degree to take part in this course, but relevant experience is essential.
Throughout the course you will hear from industry partners with relevant case studies and data to provide practical and informative solutions.

Course details
What you study
• General overview of the current state of hydrogen usage nationally and worldwide and its position in the UK energy market
• Production methods for hydrogen (methane reforming, electrolysis) • Carbon capture storage and utilisation • Purification transport and storage of hydrogen • Hydrogen fuel cells • Hydrogen safety • Burner design • Fuel comparisons • Hydrogen carriers • Hydrogen for transportation • Hydrogen for heating • Hydrogen legislation and design standardsHow you learn
The course runs for six weeks, Tuesday and Thursday, 1.00pm – 5.00pm through blended learning.
You receive up to 60 hours of taught lessons throughout your learning, which is made up of lectures and lab sessions at our Middlesbrough Campus. There is a requirement for self-learning as part of the course which is work-based learning. How you are assessed
Summative assessment is made up of two areas which involve a time-limited computer-based assessment through our virtual learning environment, and a 2,000 word written report, assessing one of the four experiments undertaken throughout your learning.
Employability
Career opportunities
This course is designed for engineers, technicians, managers, or researchers considering transition from traditional engineering and chemical industries into the hydrogen and decarbonisation industry. You can upskill with a greater understanding of hydrogen properties and behaviours, and support future promotion and career opportunities.
