What you study

This multi-disciplinary award is of benefit to you as a professionally qualified health care practitioner, for example nurse, paramedic, health visitor, pharmacist or other allied health professional. You must have been qualified for a minimum of three years and wish to expand your role to include history taking, examination and basic diagnosis of sick infants and children. You must be practising in a community or acute health care setting that includes care and support for infants, children, and their families, for example hospital wards, accident and emergency departments, walk in centres, primary care teams, emergency services or out of hours services.

How you learn

A systems approach and case review facilitates your classroom and laboratory learning.

A practice-based workbook is used to facilitate your own practice within the clinical setting of your work.

The award is assessed using an objectively structured clinical examination that covers the systems approach.

Employability

Career opportunities

Successful completion of the award should enable you to work autonomously (subject to agreement with your line manager) to undertake a patient history and examination, request, use and interpret investigations to aid diagnosis, present and record your findings in a structured way, provide an informed opinion of the child's health status and initiate appropriate first-line treatment.
