Overview of the Chemistry Program
The Chemistry program at the University of Kent is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles of chemistry and its applications. The program is fully accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and offers a range of modules that cover the broad base of knowledge on which chemistry is founded.
Program Structure
The program is structured into three stages, with students completing a range of compulsory and optional modules in each stage. The modules are designed to develop students' knowledge and understanding of chemistry, as well as their practical laboratory skills.
Stage 1
In Stage 1, students focus on the broad base on which chemistry is founded and start to build their practical laboratory skills. Compulsory modules include:
- Fundamentals of Chemistry
- Chemistry and the Environment
- Organic Chemistry 1: Structure and Reactivity
- Inorganic Chemistry 1: Periodicity and Metals
- Physical Chemistry 1: Energy and Rates
- Experimental Chemistry 1
Stage 2
In Stage 2, students further develop their knowledge of organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry and continue to develop their laboratory skills. Compulsory modules include:
- Analytical Chemistry 1: Methods and Validation
- Biochemistry: Biomolecules and Enzymes
- Organic Chemistry 2: Molecular Synthesis
- Inorganic Chemistry 2: Organometallics and Main Group
- Physical Chemistry 2: Quantum Mechanics
- Experimental Chemistry 2
Stage 3
In Stage 3, students complete an independent research project and a range of compulsory and optional modules. Compulsory modules include:
- Analytical Chemistry 2: Advanced Methods
- Materials Chemistry: Methods and Materials
- Organic Chemistry 3: Advanced Synthesis
- Inorganic Chemistry 3: Structure and Reactivity
- Physical Chemistry 3: Computational Chemistry
- Chemistry Research Project
