Program Overview


Overview of the Medicines Optimisation Programme

The Medicines Optimisation programme at the University of Kent is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute effectively to medicines management services and individual drug therapy decisions. This programme is offered by the Medway School of Pharmacy, a joint venture between the University of Kent and the University of Greenwich.

About the Medway School of Pharmacy

The Medway School of Pharmacy is one of the few regional schools of pharmacy in the UK. It was established in response to the local community's recognition of the shortage of qualified pharmacists in all branches of the pharmacy profession in Kent. The school is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Entry Requirements

  • A first degree in a relevant subject from an EU university
  • Equivalent qualifications from a non-EU university may be acceptable, but their comparability will be assessed on an individual basis
  • At least five years of working experience in healthcare after obtaining a relevant professional qualification
  • Students must also be registered with the relevant UK professional body and practising in the UK, preferably within the National Health Service

English Language Entry Requirements

Course Structure

The programme is designed to give students advanced study skills, a deeper knowledge of the subject, and the confidence to achieve their ambitions. The course structure includes:


  • Certificate level (60 credits): Two 10 credit core courses plus 40 credits from the list of options
  • Diploma level (60 credits): Two 10 credit core courses plus 40 credits from the list of options
  • MSc level (60 credits): Research project related to practice, thesis and abstract, poster presentation

How You'll Study

The programme is delivered through a combination of online and distance learning. Students can link their learning to the workplace by participating in portfolio activities. The learning activities are sections of material that invite students to formulate their own response to the situation under study.
