Program Overview

Introduction to the BSc (Hons) Forensic and Analytical Science Program

The BSc (Hons) Forensic and Analytical Science program at Robert Gordon University offers a comprehensive education in forensic science, providing students with the necessary skills to succeed in this exciting and challenging field. The program is designed to provide a crime scene to courtroom learning experience, equipping students with key problem-solving skills and extensive practical experience in analytical instrumentation.

Program Structure and Duration

The program is a four-year undergraduate degree, with each year building on the previous one to provide a thorough understanding of forensic and analytical science. The mode of study is on-campus, and the mode of attendance is full-time. The program starts in September, and the course length is four years.

Year 1: Foundations of Forensic and Analytical Science

In the first year, students develop an understanding of the basic principles of chemistry, biology, and analytical science, along with the broad principles of forensic science. They also learn basic laboratory skills appropriate to chemical and biological analysis and forensic investigation.

Year 2: Advanced Analytical Techniques

In the second year, students further develop their knowledge of analytical techniques in chemistry and biology and acquire an understanding of more complex instrumentation, reinforced through practical work. They also develop an underpinning legal knowledge through a study of the legal framework.

Year 3: Specialist Areas and Placement Opportunity

In the third year, students increase their competence in laboratory practice through specialist areas, including analytical chemistry and forensic toxicology. They undertake group exercises in trace forensic analysis and present data to a court of law. There is also an optional placement opportunity between Years 3 and 4, which can be sourced directly by the student or through liaison with the Placement Officer.

Year 4: Advanced Forensic Investigation and Research Project

In the final year, students cover advanced analytical and DNA techniques and further develop key forensic investigation and presentation skills in a court of law. They also undertake an individual Research Project, demonstrating scientific writing and presentation skills.

Assessment and Feedback

Assessment methods vary by year and include written exams, oral assessments, practical skills assessments, crime scene exercises, reports, portfolios, and moot court cross-examinations. Feedback is provided within 20 working days of hand-in for all written exams, coursework, and practical exams.

Entry Requirements

The standard entry requirements for Year 1 include:

  • SQA Higher: BBBC to include Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, or Physics at Grade C, with Chemistry, English, and Maths required at National 5 Grade B or above if not held at Higher.
  • GCE A Level: BCC to include Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, with Chemistry, English, and Maths required at GCSE grade 4/C or above if not held at A Level.
  • Irish Leaving Certificate Higher: H2H3H3H3 to include Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, with Chemistry, English, and Maths required at grade O2 or above if not held at Higher.
  • IB Diploma: 27 to include Higher Level Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, or Physics at grade 4, with Chemistry, English, and Maths required at a minimum of Standard Level grade 4 if not held at Higher Level.

Fees and Funding

The tuition fees for the program vary by year and student location. For the academic year, the fees are as follows:

  • Scottish Students: 」1,820 per year for four years.

  • International Students: 」18,550 per year for four years (for the academic year) and 」17,920 per year for four years (for the academic year).

Additional Costs

Additional costs include a specialist laboratory cost of 」30 per year, materials cost of 」10, and specialist clothing cost of 」10. Other costs, such as books, placement costs, accommodation, and living expenses, are not included in the course fees.

Accreditation and Professional Recognition

The program is accredited by The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences (CSFS), and students are eligible to apply for student membership. The program also satisfies the criteria for Associate Membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Facilities and Resources

The university provides dedicated facilities for forensic and analytical science students, including a Mock Crime Scene Facility, Forensic Imaging Laboratory, and Analytical Science Lab. These facilities ensure that students gain hands-on experience with a wide range of forensic analysis and instrumentation.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the BSc (Hons) Forensic and Analytical Science program can pursue a diverse range of career opportunities, including roles in the Scottish Police Services Authority, Forensic Science Laboratories, and industry. Many graduates also opt for postgraduate study in specialist forensic disciplines or teaching. The program's strong industry connections and accreditation by professional bodies enhance graduate employability and career prospects.
