Introduction to the MSc Information and Library Studies Course

The online MSc Information and Library Studies course at Robert Gordon University is designed to develop critical, analytical thinking and practice-oriented skills. This course replicates the environment found in the workplace by combining theoretical and practical teaching methods.


Course Overview

The MSc Information and Library Studies course explores the value of information to societies, how it is effectively organized, structured, managed, and disseminated, and the variety of sources and services. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to hear from industry professionals and practice their skills within real-life scenarios.


Modes of Study

The course is available in two modes of study:


  • Online Learning: This mode allows students to learn via the university's online virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle, which provides access to lectures, course materials, and a supportive online community.
  • Modes of Attendance: The course can be taken full-time or part-time, with start dates in September and January.

Course Length

The duration of the course varies depending on the mode of attendance:


  • Full-time: 12 months
  • Part-time: 32 months (September start) or 33 months (January start)

Course Structure

The course is divided into three stages:


Stage 1

Students develop knowledge and skills to perform professional tasks involved in information enquiry and reference work. They gain an understanding of techniques of representation and organization of recorded knowledge, cataloging, and classification.


Stage 2

Students develop capabilities to perform professional tasks in the management of modern library and information services within an information environment center or library. They identify and conduct independent topical investigations and critically reflect on relevant work-related skills.


Stage 3

Students design and execute research and conduct a project of professional concern in the field of information and library studies. They analyze the results of such investigations and apply their communication and presentation skills at an advanced level.

Typically, students are assessed through:


  • Written assignments, including essays
  • Reports
  • Dissertation or practical project output
  • Set exercises
  • Oral assessments
  • Group critique

Entry Requirements

Applicants normally hold a 2:2 undergraduate honors degree or its equivalent in any subject area. Applicants with a lower degree classification and/or relevant work experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.


International Students

International students who do not meet the direct entry requirements can gain additional entry points through the International College at Robert Gordon University.


English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5, or an equivalent.
