Introduction to the International Tourism and Hospitality Management Course
The International Tourism and Hospitality Management course at Robert Gordon University is a postgraduate program designed in collaboration with industry, the Tourism Management Institute (TMI), and the Institute of Hospitality (IoH). This course offers students the opportunity to gain professional expertise and an industry-tailored Master's degree.
Course Overview
The MSc International Tourism and Hospitality Management course recognizes the importance of tourism and hospitality to national and international economies and the need for enthusiastic, competent managers to lead and inform the projected growth of the industry. A key focus of the course is on the development of digital skills to manage, communicate, and sell to the target customer.
Mode of Study and Attendance
The course is available in different modes of study and attendance:
- On Campus, Full Time, starting in September, with a course length of 12 months
- On Campus, Full Time, starting in January, with a course length of 16 months
- On Campus, Part Time, starting in September, with a course length of 32 months
- On Campus, Part Time, starting in January, with a course length of 33 months
Course Structure
The course is divided into three stages:
- Stage 1: Students gain a thorough understanding and awareness of contemporary tourism and hospitality issues and learn how to plan and develop strategies within both domestic and international contexts.
- Stage 2: Students continue to develop their specialist skills, in-depth knowledge, and practical experience. They present a written research proposal for submission, which will normally form the basis for the Master's dissertation or project. A four-week professional skills enhancement placement or project is undertaken at the end of the taught modules.
- Stage 3: Students are given the opportunity to conduct a piece of substantive, independent research in an area of their own choosing within international tourism and hospitality.
Teaching and Assessment
- Lectures: 15-80 students per group, 6 hours per week
- Tutorials: 15-30 students per group, 6-10 hours per week
- Project Supervision: Monthly meetings during the dissertation phase
- Industry Placement/Project: Minimum 25 hours per week for 4 weeks during the course
- External Visits: Various hours per course
- Assessment: 6 reports, 1 dissertation, 1 portfolio
Entry Requirements
- Applicants normally hold a 2:2 undergraduate honors degree or its equivalent in any subject area.
- Applicants with a lower degree classification and/or relevant work experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- English Language Requirements: IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5, or an equivalent.
