Program Overview

The LLB (Hons) Law degree at Robert Gordon University will provide you with an academically rigorous, practical and diverse education in the discipline of Scots Law. You will gain the knowledge, required by the Law Society of Scotland, to enter the legal profession, and the flexibility to tailor your subject profile to suit your intended career path.

The combination of private and public law subjects and the development of key transferable skills will equip you with the professional knowledge to meet the challenges of the employment sectors, whether in the legal profession or elsewhere. Practical experience is developed through oral presentations, group work, research and legal debating also known as mooting. You will have the opportunity to take part in internal, national and international mooting competitions and benefit from our on-campus Moot Court.

Program Outline

Year 1

Year 1 provides a fundamental understanding of the purposes and sources of Law and the main elements of Public and Private Law in Scotland, in the context of the UK, the EU and the wider international environment. You will develop and apply key research, written and oral communication skills in addition to other transferable skills.

Year 2

Concepts introduced in Year 1 are developed and you will learn specialised knowledge of other more complex Private and Public Law subjects. Your knowledge and understanding of the ethics and standards applying to the legal profession will be further established.

Year 3

At the start of the Honours programme in Year 3, you will broaden your understanding of Law through the study of more specialist Law modules. This will enable you to study relevant non-Law specific modules such as Forensic Science or Management Studies for Law and to further develop your research and professional skills.

Year 4

The final year provides you with the opportunity to undertake a range of additional specialist Law modules relevant to your career aspirations. You prepare a Dissertation on a specialist topic through independent study and research. The grade that you achieve in each module in Year 4 determines your Honours classification.
