Introduction to the BA (Hons) Law and Management Course

The BA (Hons) Law and Management course at Robert Gordon University is designed to equip students with a sound understanding of law and key business management skills and knowledge. This undergraduate program offers a high level of flexibility, particularly at the Honours level, allowing students to specialize in areas of interest.

What You Will Study

The curriculum is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of law and management principles. In Year 1, students gain an understanding of the sources and nature of legal rules and institutions, as well as an overview of managerial and economic systems relevant to business. Transferable skills such as analytical and presentation skills are also taught.


Year 1

  • Students study four modules each term, with each module involving around three hours of class teaching per week.
  • Modules include an introduction to law, management principles, and economic concepts.

Year 2

  • This year develops concepts introduced in Year 1 and provides specialized knowledge of Private and Public Law subjects and areas of Management of particular relevance to businesses.
  • Students have the option to choose a specific area of Management for focused study.

Year 3

  • Students build on the fundamental Legal and Management concepts learned in Years 1 and 2 and continue to gain specialized knowledge.
  • There is an opportunity to undertake a placement to gain practical experience and build on employability skills.
  • An optional legal route is available for students after successful completion of Year 3 if they wish to access the LLB.

Year 4

  • In the final year, students can specialize further in either law, management, or a combination of both.
  • Relevant to career aspirations, the modules develop students' understanding of Law and Management and help prepare a Dissertation on a specialist topic through independent study and research.
  • The grade achieved in each module in the final year determines the Honours classification.

Independent Study

In Year 4, students undertake a 12,000-word Dissertation, which accounts for two modules. The remaining six modules are optional, allowing students to tailor their degree to a chosen career pathway in either Law or Management.


Staff

All academic staff are encouraged to work towards a Higher Education Academy Fellowship. Many staff have professional Legal and Management experience, meaning the course is taught with a highly practical edge.


Assessment

In Year 3, students can spend a 12-week term abroad at one of the university's partner universities in Europe or the US.


Job Prospects

Previous BA Law and Management graduates have gone on to pursue careers as qualified conveyancers, executory practitioners, technical analysts, paralegals, logistics executives, and more. Graduates secure positions in oil and gas companies, banks, businesses, the civil service, corporate consultancy firms, and the police.
