About Program

Program Overview


This MSc Renewable Energy Engineering course is an interdisciplinary course across the Schools of Engineering, Business and Computing. The course will provide graduates with practical experience as it incorporates practical activities, site visits, case study learning, and industry guest speakers lectures.

There will also be an opportunity for completing the final project with industry, final projects will be supported by our School research groups working in these areas, thus providing graduates with research skills as well. The course also include group projects on real life applications that address various aspects of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This course allows graduation with two options, either MSc in Renewable Energy Engineering with specialisation in "Innovation and Design" or "Operation and Maintenance".

Program Outline

Term 1

In Term 1, you will study the following modules, Renewable Energy Management, Renewable Energy Technologies, Advanced Computational Methods in Renewable Energy Innovation and Sustainability.


Term 2

In Term 2, you will study the following two modules, Data Visualisation and Analysis, and Sustainable Enterprise Development, and two modules based on specialisation. For Design and Innovation specialization, these modules are Advanced Power System for Renewables Integration, and Renewable Energy Systems Design, and for the Operations and Maintenance specialization these modules are Inspection and Maintenance, and Reliability and Life Cycle.  Engineering.


Term 3

Term 3 is the final term, where you will focus on the Individual Project Report in Design and Innovation or Operations and Maintenance.

Learning Methods

The course will be delivered in both blended learning full time and online learning part time modes.

The blended learning full time mode of study involves the completion of the 8 study modules including some group working followed by an individual project over a period of 12 calendar months. The taught element of the course comprises four 15 credit modules in Semester 1 and four 15 credit modules in semester 2. The taught element of the course is followed, in Semester 3, by the 60 credit MSc Project. The MSc Project is a core module, central to the objectives of the course, and enables the student to put into practice the theories taught on the course.

Online learning part time will be via our virtual learning environment

, students will take two 15 credit modules per Semester for 4 Semesters followed by 60 credit MSc Project in Semesters 5 and 6 over a duration of 28 months.

Each module involves around 35 hours of lectures and tutorials and 115 hours of private study.

Modules may be supplemented by industrial visits and industry speakers where practical and appropriate.

    Admission Requirements

    What is needed for MSc Renewable Energy Engineering?

  • Applicants normally hold a 2:2 undergraduate honours degree or its equivalent in Engineering or a relevant Science discipline.
  • Applicants with either a relevant non-Engineering background such as Geology, Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics and/or applicants with a lower degree classification or those with relevant work experience will be considered on a case by case basis.
  • Applicants are not usually interviewed, although some may be if they do not meet the standard entry requirements.

  • English Language Requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5, or an equivalent.
