Program Overview


MSc Renewable Energy Engineering

The MSc Renewable Energy Engineering course is an interdisciplinary program across the Schools of Engineering, Business, and Computing. It provides graduates with practical experience, incorporating practical activities, site visits, case study learning, and industry guest speakers' lectures.


Course Overview

The course will be delivered in both on-campus full-time and online learning part-time modes. The on-campus full-time mode involves completing eight study modules, including group work, followed by an individual project over 12 calendar months. The online learning part-time mode will be via the virtual learning environment CampusMoodle, with students taking two 15-credit modules per semester for four semesters, followed by a 60-credit MSc project in semesters five and six over 28 months.


Term 1

In Term 1, students will study the following modules:


  • Renewable Energy Management
  • Renewable Energy Technologies
  • Advanced Computational Methods in Renewable Energy Innovation and Sustainability

Term 2

In Term 2, students will study the following modules:


  • Data Visualisation and Analysis
  • Sustainable Enterprise Development
  • Two modules based on specialization:
    • For Design and Innovation specialization: Advanced Power System for Renewables Integration, and Renewable Energy Systems Design
    • For Operations and Maintenance specialization: Inspection and Maintenance, and Reliability and Life Cycle Engineering

Term 3

Term 3 is the final term, where students will focus on the Individual Project Report in Design and Innovation or Operations and Maintenance.


Learning Methods

The course includes lectures, tutorials, practical classes, and independent study. Each module involves around 35 hours of lectures and tutorials and 115 hours of private study. Modules may be supplemented by industrial visits and industry speakers where practical and appropriate.


Activity Summary

  • Lectures: 40 students per group, 16 hours per week
  • Tutorial: 15 students per group, 8 hours per week
  • Practical class or workshop: 4 students per group, 2 hours per week
  • Independent Study: 10 hours per week

The Library offers support for the course, including books, eBooks, and journals, as well as online reading lists, workshops, and drop-ins on searching skills and referencing.

Entry Requirements

Applicants normally hold a 2:2 undergraduate honors degree or its equivalent in Engineering or a relevant Science discipline. Applicants with a relevant non-Engineering background or a lower degree classification may be considered on a case-by-case basis.


English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS of 6.0 overall, with no component lower than 5.5, or an equivalent.
