About Program

Program Overview

In order to maximise efficiency as well as achieve organisational goals, it is accepted that leadership is a vital function within any business. Leadership skills can be learned and this course is the start of this learning for those who want to develop or hone their leadership skills.

This course is designed to provide students with the tools and theoretical knowledge to evaluate the challenges associated with leading at a strategic level and to reflect on their own preparation to these challenges.

Program Outline

The topics covered in the course will include: The leader's role; leadership development strategies and tools; leadership traits and abilities; leadership styles and ideal approaches; leadership situational requirements; building the supervisory relationship for performance; diversity and leading in a multi-cultural environment.

It is expected that by the end of the module students will have knowledge and understanding of  the abilities and skills supporting strategic leaders as well as the range of variables which influence leadership requirements. In addition, strategies for building relationships with stakeholders as well as personal development issues relating to leadership will be discussed and appraised.

This course is mapped to the

Chartered Management Institute (CMI)

module Strategic Leadership (7031V1) and students have the option, following payment of an additional fee, to attempt the assessment for this CMI module. Successful completion of this CMI module will result in the student being awarded 7 CMI credits.

Learning Methods

This is a fully online programme, including lecture slides, topic overviews, video clips, interactive forums and real time online tutorials.

There is a short induction session where you can get to know your classmates and learn more about the aims and structure of the course. You will then embark on approximately 6 weeks of study delivered online. Teaching is broken down into short manageable (approximately 1-hour) lessons and additional activities (approximately 4 hours per week) that you can study in your own time and at your own pace. While studying online you will have access to your tutor who will be able to answer any questions you may have. You will study 2 topics per week.

At the end of the course, you will submit the module assessment, the brief for which will be uploaded from the start of your course.

To complete this course you will need access to a modern laptop or computer running an up-to-date operating system and a reliable internet connection.

Staff delivering on this course

Staff involved in the delivery of this course will be suitably qualified in terms of subject area as well as teaching and learning. In addition, the staff member(s) will be experienced in online delivery.

Independent Study

Students are expected to engage in wider reading around each of the topics within the module.  There will be directed reading as well as guidance on wider reading.

The majority of this course is completed through online independent study, it is expected that you will spend approximately 6-9 hours per week working on this module. Whilst you are studying independently you won’t be alone. Your tutor will be there to support you throughout the module.
