Introduction to BEng (Hons) Mechanical and Offshore Engineering

The BEng (Hons) Mechanical and Offshore Engineering degree at Robert Gordon University is designed to provide students with the ability to work methodically and logically to solve real-world problems. Course Overview

• The course has an international focus, with students gaining knowledge in oil and gas exploration and recovery, platform design, pipelines, down-hole instrumentation, and energy transformation.
• The first two years are common across the Mechanical Engineering courses, allowing students to make an informed decision about which route to take at the end of Year 2.
• The course is available for full-time study on campus, with start dates in September and January (for international students via the International College).

Course Structure

Year 1

Students will develop basic knowledge and understanding of fundamental principles in Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering, as well as practical, organizational, study, and IT skills.

Year 2

Foundations laid down in Year 1 are built upon, increasing students' level of knowledge and understanding. Students will develop their problem-solving skills and enhance their ability to interpret and critically evaluate technical data and information.

Year 3

This year enables students to further develop their analytical skills and competence. They will also learn about and implement Project Management through studying key principles and undertaking group project work.

Year 4

In the final year, students will engage in an individual research or industrial project to integrate technical, transferable, and project management skills. They will also increase their depth of knowledge and understanding by studying further specialist modules.

Assessment and Feedback

• Typically, students are assessed each term with a combination of written exams and coursework.
• Feedback is provided within 20 working days of submission of coursework, aiming to support students' learning and improvement.

Academic Support

• The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia, and other specific learning differences.
• Online learning and support are available through Moodle, the university's virtual learning environment.
• Study skills support is provided, including training in academic writing, study skills, maths, and statistics.

Placements and Job Prospects

• Although placements are not currently embedded in the BEng courses, they form part of the MEng programs.
• Graduates are highly sought after and have gone on to pursue careers in the global oil and gas engineering sector, including roles such as Marine Engineer, Senior Well Engineer, and Petroleum Engineer.

Standard Entry Requirements

• SQA Higher: BBCC to include Maths and either Engineering Science, Physics, Chemistry, or Technological Studies.
• GCE A Level: CCC to include Mathematics and one from Physics, Chemistry, Design Technology, Electronics, or Engineering.
• Irish Leaving Certificate Higher: H3H3H3H3 to include Maths and either Physics or Technological Studies.
• IB Diploma: 26 to include Higher Level Maths and Physics, one of which must be at grade 5.

Minimum Entry Requirements

• SQA Higher: CCCC to include Maths and either Engineering Science, Physics, Chemistry, or Technological Studies.

Fees and Funding

• Scottish Students: ｣1,820 per year for four years.
• Rest of UK Students: ｣9,535 per year for four years (for the academic year mentioned).
• International Students: ｣18,940 per year for four years.
• Student funding and scholarships are available, including support from SAAS for Scottish residents and scholarships from local companies.

Accreditation

The course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council, fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partly meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Facilities

Students have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including the Wind Tunnel and Engineering Applications Labs, which are used for experimental procedures and hands-on learning.
