Introduction

The English and Scottish Literature, MA program is designed for students who are interested in the study of English and Scottish literature, and who wish to develop their critical and analytical skills in this area. The program covers a wide range of periods and genres, from the Middle Ages to the present day, and includes the study of Scottish literature in its historical and cultural contexts.

What You'll Study

The program consists of four years of study, with a range of compulsory and optional courses. In Year 1, students take compulsory courses in Academic Writing for Language & Literature, Getting Started at the University of Aberdeen, Acts of Reading, Controversial Classics, and Rethinking Reading. In Year 2, students take compulsory courses in Encounters with Shakespeare, and optional courses in Power, Empire and Equality, The Tragedy of Knowledge, and Power, Empire and Equality.

In Year 3, students take compulsory courses in Haunted Texts or Sympathy for the Devil: Scottish Short Stories, and optional courses in Page and Stage: Renaissance Writings, Knights, Virgins and Viragos: Chaucer and Medieval Writing, Modernism: Make IT New, American Voices: Self and Society, Britain and the Nineteenth-Century World, Romanticism, Fallen Women and Self-Made Men, Haunted Texts, Art and Atrocity: Representations of Violence and Trauma, Creative Writing: Creativity and Craft, Landscapes of Film and Literature, Landmarks of Modern Austrian Literature, and Playful Fictions: Cervantes, Borges, Cortazar.

In Year 4, students take a compulsory course in Dissertation in Scottish Literature, and optional courses in a range of topics.

Assessment Methods

Students are assessed by any combination of three assessment methods:

• Coursework such as essays and reports completed throughout the course.
• Practical assessments of the skills and competencies they learn on the course.
• Written examinations at the end of each course.
