Degree Overview:

This 5-year MA program combines the study of Spanish language and culture with a deep exploration of the history, function, and meaning of religion. It equips graduates with strong language skills and a solid academic foundation, valuable in many roles both locally and internationally.


#Objectives:

  • Equip graduates with strong communication skills in Spanish, spoken by 350 million native speakers.
  • Enable students to explore the rich cultural frameworks of Spain and Latin American countries through historical, anthropological, literary, and visual culture studies.
  • Develop a sound understanding of the major religious traditions of the world, with a particular focus on Christian faith, life, and doctrine.
  • Foster critical thinking skills through engagement with biblical languages, church history, the Reformation in Scotland, and contemporary ethical and political debates.
  • Prepare graduates for diverse career paths, including church ministry and administration, media and journalism, public service, charities, NGO and international affairs, business, publishing, and education.

Outline:

The program comprises 5 years of intensive study, divided into the following structure:


Year 1:

  • Compulsory courses: Academic Writing for Divinity, History & Philosophy; Getting Started at the University of Aberdeen.
  • Optional courses: Select one language option (Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced) and complete 60 credit points from level 1 courses in Divinity or approved courses like Latin 1 and 2.

Year 2:

  • Compulsory courses: None.
  • Optional courses: Select one language option (Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced) and complete 60 credit points from level 2 courses in Divinity.

Year 3:

  • Compulsory course: Residence Abroad Project (15 credit points), where students delve into a specific anthropological, political, or cultural aspect of a Spanish-speaking country.

Year 4:

  • Compulsory course: Spanish Language 6 (15 credit points) to hone fluency and accuracy in various registers.
  • Optional courses: 45 credit points from level 3 courses in Spanish & Latin American Studies and 60 credit points from level 3 courses in Divinity.

Year 5:

  • Compulsory course: Spanish Language 7 (30 credit points) to refine advanced comprehension and writing skills in specialized domains.
  • Optional courses: Select one dissertation option: Dissertation in Hispanic Studies, Dissertation, or Dissertation in Spanish.
  • 60 credit points are split between level 4 courses in both disciplines.
