Course Overview
The Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (Fashion and Textiles) is a one-year, full-time program that allows students to explore fashion and textile design activities, assess their strengths, and confirm their degree aspirations.
Why Study This Course?
This course provides practical guidance, including interview preparation and portfolio presentation. It exposes students to fashion and textile design activities, helping them assess their strengths and confirm their degree aspirations. Students will also have the opportunity to progress directly into internships or work.
Course Structure and Admissions
Stage 1: Explanatory
- Design development
- Life drawing
- Observation skills
- Realisation and presentation of final ideas
- Recording and research techniques
Students will also undertake a contextual studies lecture series and written assignment.
Stage 2: Pathway
Students will deepen and develop specialist knowledge within their chosen subject area. They will be encouraged to look and work beyond narrow definitions and collaborate with staff and students from other disciplines.
Stage 3: Confirmatory
During the final stage, students will undertake and complete a major seven-week project, reflecting on their chosen specialist area of fashion and textiles and their planned progression path. This project will culminate in a public exhibition of their work.
Progression
Most students go on to higher education, and many to Ravensbourne fashion degree courses. If students decide to go directly into work, the university will help them find opportunities.
Entry Requirements
- Four GCSEs, grade C or above, including English and Maths
- One A-level, Grade C or above in a relevant subject area
- Progression Diploma (Level 3) in a related subject area
- Advanced Diploma (Level 3) in a related subject area
- BTEC Level 3 national award or certificate qualifications may also be considered for entry
Portfolio Requirements
Admission onto this course is subject to successful review of the student's portfolio. The portfolio should provide evidence of creative interests, research, development, and examples of work in progress.
