About Program

Program Overview

This Foundation Year program in Mechanical Engineering prepares students with weaker qualifications for entry into a related undergraduate degree. It provides a comprehensive foundation in mathematics, engineering principles, and physics, along with academic and research skills.

Program Outline

This program provides:

  • A route for students who haven't studied the required subjects for direct entry onto a degree course, or haven't achieved the necessary qualifications.
  • A pathway for those returning to education or with non-traditional academic backgrounds to access higher level engineering studies.
  • Applicants are considered on the strength of their UCAS application and an interview with the department, which allows the department to assess academic potential, meet with applicants, and provide an opportunity to visit Loughborough University.

Aims of the program:

  • Equip individuals with the required scientific, technical, and mathematical expertise to engage with a mechanical engineering degree course.
  • Enhance academic skills in preparation for higher education, such as research skills, referencing, writing, and presentation techniques.
  • Develop critical analysis and problem-solving skills to a level required for university-level studies.
  • Foster the development of independent learning skills.

Outline

Year one:

This year consists mainly of compulsory foundational modules, offering comprehensive preparation across mathematics, engineering principles, and physics, as well as computer science, creative problem solving, and key academic and research skills. The specific modules may be subject to changes year on year, but the latest available are listed below:

Compulsory modules:

  • Mathematics (including Statistics, Mechanics & Modelling)
  • Engineering Design & Innovation
  • The Science of Engineering 1 & 2
  • Programming for Engineers
  • Creativity, Innovation & Problem-Solving
  • Academic and Research Skills

Assessment

Foundation modules are generally assessed through written exams and/or coursework assignments. Typical coursework assessments include:

  • Laboratory reports
  • Essays
  • Presentations
  • Assessed tutorials and workshops
  • Peer-reviewed assignments
  • Students are expected to dedicate two hours of independent learning for every one hour spent in lectures and workshops.

Other

Elite athlete pathway The program provides a special opportunity for:

  • High-performing athletes engaged with competitive sport at a junior international level or higher, or those expecting to be within the next 12 months.
  • Athletes seeking to pursue a university education, but with limited qualifications due their sporting commitments.
  • This pathway allows such individuals the opportunity to combine a challenging academic program with the demands of their athletic training and competitions.

Industry links and placement opportunities Loughborough University boasts strong links with world-leading industry partners and international businesses. This program offers a range of opportunities for students, including:

  • Live project placements
  • Industrial visits and tours
  • Guest speaker events from leading industry figures

Additional notes:

  • Students are required to attend all lectures, seminars, tutorials, and other designated activities.
  • Independent learning is crucial and students are expected to dedicate at least one day per month to dedicated library time and completion of independent work.

UK fees: £9,250 per annum International fees: See ONCAMPUS Loughborough University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment.
