Core modules
Audio Production
On this module you will learn how the technology of audio production works, as well as the techniques of recording and mixing music for studio or live sound - and how to make your understanding of the technology improve the quality of your recording and mixing.
Introduction to Acoustics
In this module we will introduce you to the fundamental concepts of acoustics, examining the properties of sound and vibration. You will study how sound is propagated, transmitted and absorbed, and its behaviour under different conditions.
Engineering Principles
This module will help you to understand how to quantify and model physical properties and phenomena as well as how to critically analyse observations. You will explore mathematical techniques and be introduced to functions such as logarithms and sine.
Electronic Fundamentals
This module is designed to introduce you to a range of fundamental electronic components and their operational characteristics. You will consider key properties in the context of audio and visual technologies.
Video Production
You will learn about TV studio equipment, how to set it up, how it works as a system and how to operate it. By creating a short TV programme you will also learn single camera operation, to create inserts for a programme.
Computing and Networking
On this module you will explore how computers are built and discover the unique way in which computers store, manipulate, and display data and what the implications of this are on the way you use computing tools.
Core modules
Audio Systems
This module will introduce you to the core concepts relating to small room acoustics, electroacoustic transducers and the typical components of professional audio systems, including Audio over IP.
Live Sound Techniques
You will gain an appreciation of the many factors that need to be accounted for in live sound reinforcement and live recording and will be able to select tools and techniques appropriate to a variety of contexts, setups and situations encountered.
Project Management
This module has a focus on group work and management of that process. Learning how to communicate effectively, organise information and identify roadblocks is vital in successfully managing a project.
Media Formats
In this module you will learn about a variety of different signal coding and container formats in order to critically evaluate a range of standard compression codecs for media applications.
Event Technology
In this module you will obtain an appreciation of the many factors that need to be accounted for, in putting on Live Events and will be able to select tools and techniques appropriate to a variety of contexts, setups and scenarios.
Optional modules
Please note: Not all optional modules are guaranteed to run each year.
Practical Electronics
In this module you will be supported to develop problem-solving and fault-finding skills through practical projects.
Audio Post Production
Within this module, you will focus upon signal flow, workflow terminology and underlying creative principles that are appropriate to audio post-production.
Core modules
Live Sound Technologies
In this module you'll gain an appreciation of the factors that need to be accounted for in specifying, configuring and operating professional sound reinforcement systems and will be able to select tools and techniques appropriate to a variety of settings.
Audio Systems Design
In the module you will explore a range of methods and underlying principles in order to analyse acoustic environments for a range of applications, design appropriate sound reproduction and control systems.
Project
The project module is aimed at allowing you to show off both your technical and your project management skills and is typically one of the main things that employers are interested in when interviewing for graduate roles.
Event Management
This module will allow you to explore the skills and expectations of a managed environment, particularly that of live events.
Optional modules
Please note: Not all optional modules are guaranteed to run each year.
Transducer Design
In this module you will discuss and reflect upon the basic physics involved in what we call “transducing”, namely the transformation of acoustic energy into electric energy and vice versa.
Sound for Games
In this module you will explore the way that sound is recorded, produced, manipulated and encoded within a video game.
Media Networks and Communications
This module introduces you to the specific techniques and technologies employed in the transfer and distribution of broadcast media.
