    BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering

Start your career in one of the most exciting industries with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. From construction to commissioning, design and marketing, you’ll have a wide range of employment options through this interesting subject.

The course is a great mix of practical, hands-on experience and theory, with a 3D visualisation suite and the latest Additive Layer Manufacturing technology to prepare you for the workplace.

There are also strong links with companies in the mechanical engineering industry, such as Airbus and Jaguar, which can provide interactive student tours.

    What will I study?

All students complete modules tailored to your chosen degree subjects.

    Core Modules:

  • This module will extend your mathematical skills to the level needed to complete an Engineering degree programme. The topics covered will be fundamental to engineers in their professional careers, including computer programming to reflect the skills needed by the modern engineer. """>Engineering Mathematics and Scientific Computing
  • This module has been designed to develop your language profiency within the context of Engineering, focusing on:

  • improving your ability to read academic texts, extract and evaluate relevant information
  • produce written assignments based on reading and library-based research
  • develop fluency and confidence in seminar discussions and delivery of presentations
  • enhance your ability to extract relevant information from lectures
  • """>English Language and Study Skills for Engineering
  • This paper-based module provides the basis for developing transferable skills appropriate for university study. You will use your knowledge from the Fundamentals of Mechanics, Materials and Electronics module to complete the project. """>Multi-Disciplinary Challenge Project
  • This module introduces engineering concepts and theory across the areas of mechanics, materials and electronics, and will provide you with a solid grounding on which to build in later modules. In this module, we focus on classical mechanics.

At the heart of any engineering analysis is the need to understand an object’s response to its environment, whether it’s the forces imparted by traffic as it traverses a bridge or the forces of lift that allow an aircraft to fly. None of this analysis is possible without first understanding classical mechanics.

You will use some of the Engineering department’s lab facilities and get the opportunity to do the following:

  • learn machining in the student workshop
  • test strength of materials with Instron tensile testing machines
  • build and take measurements with electronic circuits in the Electronics lab
  • get creative in the student Maker Space
  • access specialist software in the computer labs.
  • """>Core Engineering (Mechanics, Materials and Electronics)

    Specialist Modules:

  • This module follows on from the Core Engineering module and introduces further concepts of Mechanics and Electronics in preparation for an electronics degree in Year 2. In this module, we focus on:

  • classical mechanics, including fluid statics and dynamics
  • analogue and digital electronics
  • developing a learning methodology appropriate to a professional engineer
  • """>Fundamentals of Mechanics and Electronics
  • This module follows on from the Core Engineering module and introduces further concepts of Mechanics and Materials in preparation for a mechanical degree in Year 2. In this module, we focus on:

  • classical mechanics, including fluid statics and dynamics
  • materials, including two sub-disciplines: material science and material engineering
  • developing a learning methodology appropriate to a professional engineer
  • """>Fundamentals of Mechanics and Materials

    How will I be assessed?

Assessment is both formal and informal, designed not simply to pass or fail students, but to help you build on your successes and meet the requirements for entry to the second year of a degree. Marks from the International Year One programme do not count towards the final degree, but help the University assess your abilities in your chosen field of study.

You are assessed through a combination of examinations and coursework, which may include:

  • essays
  • reports
  • practical exercises
  • group and individual research projects
  • oral presentations
  • seminar discussions
  • class tests
  • problem solving exercises.
  • "At INTO Exeter, I received lots of academic and wellbeing support. The tutors were professional and very patient, they even spent extra time with students if they were struggling with content. Classes are small, so I was not too scared to ask questions in front of other students, and the atmosphere was really fun and supportive."
