Overview
This top-up course is informed by data science, AI and machine learning. Data science research has impact wherever analysis of large-scale complex data is useful. It enables businesses and policy makers to determine trends, it can be used in disease prevention, preventing terrorist attacks, cybersecurity, combatting crime and in the discovery of new scientific knowledge. You will learn a range of industry specific software and tools such as Oracle, Python (Anaconda Navigator), R Studio and Weka.

Course structure
We employ a blended teaching and learning approach and work consistently to expose you to real-world industrial activity while developing essential practical skills. You will learn through a mix of lectures, interactive lectorials, lab-based practicals, classroom-based seminars, group problem-solving sessions, case studies, guest expert lectures, one-to-one and group supervision and online learning.
You will be assessed mostly by practical coursework, with some written assessments and occasional written examinations or time-constrained assessments.
Course modules
Core modules:
- Research Module (20 credits)
- Undertake advanced study in order to define, plan and a develop a proposal for a research investigation and scope, plan, develop and produce an academic research paper.
- Product Development (20 credits)
- Work with a client to develop a practical solution to a business problem, using up-to-date practitioner methods across the project life cycle.
- Business Intelligence and Strategy (20 credits)
- Learn about the practical applications of big data in a business context and gain a critical awareness of the strategic challenges and opportunities afforded by business intelligence to organisations. Consider the professional and ethical requirements of big data.
- Advanced Data Technologies (20 credits)
- Understand how traditional and newer data models and database technologies support real world demands of data. Investigate various data architectures and how they can represent structured and unstructured data in traditional and big data systems, methods for designing, developing and maintaining these data systems, and tools for data access and analysis including data analytics tools and how they are used in areas such as data science.
- Artificial Intelligence (20 credits)
- Gain a broad introduction into AI techniques and a detailed understanding of the application of some critical approaches, so that when you go into industry or research, you are able to choose and develop a solution using the correct AI techniques for the problem.
- User Experience Design (20 credits)
- Study the principles and practices that ensure users gain the most appropriate experience when interacting with computer-based software and hardware systems. Focus on the three core principles of interaction design: understanding users and their contexts which involve learning techniques to profile users and analyse their tasks, design principles such as layout and dialogue design, and user-centred evaluation methods such as usability testing and expert inspection.
