Program Overview


Master of Education (Health Professions) MEd

Overview

This Master of Education (Health Professions Education) course enables you to study a wide range of topics relevant to educating tomorrow’s health professionals. The course provides initial teacher preparation for staff new to education, with modules covering both teaching, learning, assessment and curriculum design.

Course structure

This part-time course uses a mix of lectures, group-based seminars and interactive workshop activities, and action learning sets. Online quizzes and self-directed learning will also support your student learning experience.


Course modules

Year 1:

  • Learning and Teaching: Applying Theory to Practice (30 credits) Explore academic practice and gain an overview of learning theories, practical classroom teaching and learning approaches, while also covering a range of pedagogical approaches. Identify both why you are taking an approach as well as having the ability to implement, adapt and evaluate contemporary approaches to health professions education.
  • Designing Learning and Assessment for the Health Professions (30 credits) Gain an insight into the theory behind the utilisation of signature pedagogies and approaches to learning and teaching such as problem, case or team-based learning and develop skills and confidence in delivering learning using these methods.

Year 2:

  • Research Methods in Education (30 credits) Explore the principles and practice of conducting educational research, including research design; research paradigms; data collection, management and analysis; use of ICT tools and resources; conducting literature surveys, writing for the academic research community; the politics and ethics of educational research; epistemological and theoretical perspectives; and current debates relating to research. You will be provided with the opportunity to generate and evaluate your own research tools, and to search for and engage in depth with relevant critical literature.
  • Designing, Leading and Managing Health Professions Education (30 credits) Focus on the leadership and management of health professions education and explore approaches to student retention, attain and progression. Learn the issues around managing student fitness to practise and the development of professionalism and examine approaches to structuring learning and teaching in the clinical setting.

Year 3:

  • Health Education Research Project (60 Credits) The assessment aims to prepare you for your role as a health educator within higher education, allowing you to experience writing research papers and presentations at a conference. You'll therefore have the opportunity to develop your knowledge of health education research, develop your research writing skills and your presentation and conference skills.

Facilities

This course is based in the Sciences Complex at our City Campus, which has benefitted from multi-million pound investment, with state-of-the-art resources for learning. Teaching may take place across both City Campus and the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's, subject to room availability.


Entry requirements

We require applicants to hold at least a 2:2 honours degree. Applicants must be in a role that includes a full range of academic responsibilities in line with the UK Professional Standards Framework dimensions and includes at least 100 hours of face-to-face scheduled teaching each year.


Fees and finance

The tuition fee for this course is £4,250 per year if you're from the UK/Ireland/EU settled/pre-settled.


Career ready

On completion of this course, you can expect to find employment at Higher Education institutions, or clinical teaching roles in the public and private sector (subject to meeting the role specification requirements).
