Nursing (Top-Up) via Study Centres BSc (Hons)

Overview

All learning on the BSc (Hons) Nursing (Top-Up) course is underpinned by evidence-based practice that promotes the development of high-quality health care provision. There's a strong emphasis on relating nursing theory to clinical practice.

Course structure

We use various methods of teaching including lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, independent learning and group work.

Each module involves an element of assessment using methods designed (where appropriate) to support professional development in clinical practice.

Course modules

Research Methods (20 credits)

Discuss the principles of research, research skills and how research can be applied to healthcare practice. Develop an understanding of qualitative and quantitative methodologies, data collection and data analysis and the structure of research question design. Examine the problems associated with research design and critiquing research papers.

Theory and Practice in Health Care (20 credits)

Explore theoretical healthcare perspectives and critically debate how they impact upon healthcare practice. Learn about healthcare theories and models relating to healthcare delivery and outcomes. Engage in debates relating to contemporary healthcare practice.

Evidence-Based Practice (20 credits)

Learn about the process of researching to inform healthcare decisions, specifically linked to practical applications within the clinical setting. Gain an understanding of the principles of healthcare evaluation, considering both the design of studies, and the elements of care which can be examined.

Management of Care (20 credits)

Explore concepts from management and business theory, as well as current ideas in healthcare delivery. Relate these concepts to the practice setting in order to manage the organisation and enhance the patient and service user’s outcomes.

Preparation for Mentorship (20 credits)

Cover an outline of learning theories, and links to practice settings; approaches to teaching in formal and informal settings; communication skills; negotiation and feedback skills; approaches to evaluation of educational programmes; the nature of assessment and reliability and validity in assessment; aspects of supervision, mentorship and preceptorship; and reflective practice and the theory.

Law and Ethics in Health Care (20 credits)

Examine legal and ethical principles which impact upon healthcare practice. Focus on current legislation, ethical theories and concepts, patients’ rights and responsibilities, confidentiality, and professional regulation. Explore ethical and legal dilemmas of healthcare.

Dissertation (40 credits)

Undertake a dissertation which will consist of a critique of an area of current interest within the nursing field. Carry out a structured systematic literature review, which will include a critical analysis of the reported literature as well as recommendations for nursing and nursing practice.
