Overview

This 10-week online course is for people with an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 5.0 or equivalent. The course will help you improve your English language and academic skills and develop your knowledge of life at university in the UK.

Course Structure

This 10-week, online course is taught via the University's Virtual Learning Environment, Canvas. You'll go to online sessions, work on tasks in your own time and practise your English in online chatrooms and group projects. Plus, you'll have weekly tutorial sessions to keep in touch with your lecturer.

Course Modules

You will study one module to develop your English skills for academic study in order to help you be successful on your main programme. This includes the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing with reference to listening skills practice, note-taking strategies, reading skills practice, vocabulary building, summarising techniques, academic written work to include essays and reports. As well as research methods, making academic presentations in English, taking part in group discussions and individual tutorials to build confidence with spoken English.

This course is delivered online so you'll need a computer and internet access to join.

Entry Requirements

We welcome applications from those with an IELTS or equivalent score of 5 or above with no individual skill score (speaking, listening, reading and writing) lower than 4.5. If your level of English is higher than IELTS 5 you can study this course and achieve a score 1 band higher than your entry score.
