Clinical Education (MHSc) - University of Galway

The Clinical Education programme at the University of Galway is designed for health professionals who wish to develop their skills and competencies as clinical educators. The programme is delivered entirely online, making it possible for students in full-time work, based in Ireland or abroad, to participate.


Course Overview

The Master of Health Sciences in Clinical Education is a one-year, full-time programme that supports health professionals who are interested in taking on leadership or scholarship roles within health professions education. The programme is also available as a Postgraduate Diploma, which can be completed over one or two academic years.


Course Structure

The Diploma in Clinical Education requires students to complete six modules, comprising core and optional modules. The Masters in Clinical Education requires students to complete the Diploma in Clinical Education course before being deemed eligible to apply.

  • MD132: Educational Research
  • MD133: Clinical Teaching Research Dissertation

Module Details

MD130: Evidence Based Education

This module is designed to build on knowledge and skills acquired during the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Teaching, with a primary focus on accurate searching, robust appraisal, meaningful data synthesis, and the construction of an effective literature review.


MD132: Educational Research

The purpose of this module is to enhance students' knowledge of research and to prepare them for the challenges of educational research design.


MD133: Clinical Teaching Research Dissertation

This module represents the capstone for the Masters in Clinical Education programme, offering students the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills gained on the programme to the design and execution of a worthy piece of educational research.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be registered healthcare professionals with at least two years post-registration experience and be actively involved in clinical education. To progress to the Masters programme, applicants typically need a minimum of 60% in the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education or an equivalent qualification.


Fees

The fees for the programme are as follows:


  • Masters: 6,350 (EU) and 10,200 (non-EU) per year
  • Postgraduate Diploma: 3,250 (EU) and 5,100 (non-EU) per year
