Program Overview

What is History and Politics BA (Hons)?

Combining history and politics involves asking some pressing questions about issues of power and human value, examining the way things are in society, and the way we want them to be. You’ll explore key ideas, events, movements and aspirations which continue to shape our world and identity. Questions about democracy, protest, activism and authority will be central for your studies, helping you to develop as a rigorous, imaginative thinker.

As an active scholar of history and politics – not just a student – you’ll become an independent practitioner, researcher and critical thinker. Working closely with subject experts as you develop deep knowledge in your field, you’ll gain highly desirable skills in investigative, analytical research and communication. Hands-on experience with historical documents and artefacts, as well as the close examination of political structures and ideas, will help you to build essential skills for work at university and beyond.

Study style

You’ll learn through lectures, seminars, tutorials and student-led sessions, supported by digital technologies. Small group discussions allow you to connect with expert tutors and other students, with excellent environments for learning and strong group identity. You’ll choose modules to explore your interests and shape your own studies.

Our rich curriculum allows you to shape your studies in ways which match your interests. Unique placement, field trip and study abroad opportunities complement learning on the course. Previous destinations have included the USA, Canada, India and Spain, as well as various UK destinations. A variety of guest speakers, as well as local and international partnerships with museums, archives and organisations will also enrich your learning.
