Education, Ethics and Leadership MA

Overview

The MA Education, Ethics and Leadership is part of a suite of 3 routes for those with a continuing interest in developing their theory and practice in the field of educational leadership. Through this MA you will share sessions with those on the MA Education and MA Inclusive Education. This will support you to develop your understanding of different perspectives, developing your practice and critical thinking as you explore a range of key areas related to an ethical approach to leadership in education.

The range of modules which form this MA Education, Ethics and Leadership route will enable you to focus and specialise, with choices built into the assessment requirements. The curriculum reflects the latest developments in education and is delivered by a team of dedicated and experienced teaching staff with specialist areas of expertise, who are all also involved in researching and publishing within the area.

You’ll develop a deep critical understanding of how leadership and its intersection with ethics, is applied to educational settings. The course is designed to explore how we lead people and organisations from multiple perspectives – such as psychology, sociology, management and organisational theory. You will explore this through a range of modules which focus on topics such as approaches to leadership, pedagogy, ethics in education, sustainability, as well as approaches to educational research. Further information about this is available below. In the final stage of the Master’s you’ll complete a dissertation focusing on your choice of research topic within the field of ethics and educational leadership.

Study Style

You’ll be taught in lectures (including guest lecturers), seminars and workshops at our Francis Close Hall campus in Cheltenham. Contributing your own ideas and participation in discussions during sessions are significant elements within the course. You’ll be assessed 100% by coursework.

Ethics for Educators (ME7301)
- This module aims to introduce students to the basic conceptual framework of ethics such as metaethics, normative ethics and applied ethics. It investigates the standard normative theories of utilitarianism, deontology and virtue ethics. It also examines the limits of ethics, and how we might apply our values in a pluralistic and diverse world confronted by social, political and ecological challenges. These themes will be explained through the reflective practice of educators as a way of prompting students to consider the importance of ethics within practice in educational contexts.

Research 1: Philosophy, Principles & Practice (ME7302)
- Conducting research in education is a complex and sensitive process. This module aims to enable students to understand philosophies, methodologies and ethical concepts of research within the context of education. This module aims to support you with critically reviewing and understanding published research. The module will present some of the research choices available to you as start to think and design research questions and introduce you to the reflexive approach that researchers adopt within an ethical approach to research.

Pedagogies, Principles & Practice (ME7303)
- This module aims to engage students in critical review and reflection on the fundamental concept of pedagogy, the principles underpinning them and the implications for current practice. Students will review and reflect on current debates to analyse and evaluate differing pedagogical approaches to be able to apply and contextualise current challenges in implementing educational principles and pedagogies.

Introduction to Educational Leadership (ME7304)
- This module will look to introduce students to the discipline of Educational Leadership and Management. It will introduce students to the main branches of leadership and management theory common with educational institutions. We aim to introduce other disciplines such as Psychology, Sociology and Organisational Behaviour, that will be relevant for students to understand, analyse and critique common leadership narratives. Students will be encouraged to develop their own, critically-informed perspective on the concept of leadership.
In addition, this module will begin to introduce students to the inter-disciplinary study of Educational Leadership with Ethics and Moral Philosophy. Students will be provided with regular opportunities to reflect on their studies within both disciplines. They will be trained in how to use inter-disciplinary study to enhance their own viewpoints within the field. Students will be invited to use this process to analyse and consider their own perspectives and decisions within their contexts. Education and Sustainability (ME7307)
- This module explores the educational response to a range of global issues that appear to threaten our way of life. It provides a brief overview of headline social and environmental indicators that suggest that our current model of development is unsustainable before going on to consider the purpose of education and the extent to which it supports or mitigates sustainable development. It will critically analyse a range of approaches to education for sustainable development and examine the relationship between theory, policy and practice.

Change and Influence in Ethical Educational Leadership (ME7310)
- Change is common construct within educational leadership. The purpose of education is to support individuals in changing they interact with the world around them. Indeed, educational institutions find themselves in constant state of policy and organisational flux. The study of change, and how we seek to influence individuals and organisations through this process, is therefore critical.
In this module, we will explore the notion of change and influence at individual, team and organisational levels within educational organisations. A broad range of disciplines will be introduced to support students in analysing and critiquing common narratives within change. Students will continue to advance their understanding of the links between educational leadership and ethics and moral philosophy. This module will build on the foundations of Module ME7302, Ethics for Educators, by looking to attempts to provide ethical guidance when confronted with the rise in modernism and subsequent postmodernism and a decline in moral certainties. At regular intervals, students will be invited to use their growing understanding of the two disciplines to analyse and critique the narratives and assumptions underpinning popular models of organisational and individual change. Students will be encouraged to develop their own, critically informed perspective on how to engage individuals and organisations in the process of change. Students will use their studies to reflect and critique their actions within their environments and to consider how they might choose to ethically influence and instigate change in the future. Research 2: Making Meanings (ME7313)
- This module aims to consolidate and extend the skills learned in the ME7302 (Research I), to further develop understanding of the principles and practice of research with a focus upon study design and methods of data collection. This module aims to support the student with developing an understanding of the different methods that can be adopted within a research study and how the researcher’s theoretical position is linked to the decision-making for research design. Issues related to ethics, validity, reliability and trustworthiness will be considered as concerns that need to be mediated continuously throughout the ongoing practical processes of data collection, interpretation and analysis. This module aims to support the student with the skills necessary for planning, data-gathering, data analysis and the dissemination of their education related research.

Dissertation: Education, Ethics and Leadership (ME7401)
- The Dissertation is the culmination of Masters-level study and this module aims to facilitate students with synthesising and applying all the learning achieved over the entire course. This module will provide students with the opportunity to carry out a critically analytical, in-depth research project investigating an issue related to their MA award title and relevant to their continuing professional development, and to present their findings in a formal manner.
The module aims to support students to develop a systematic and rigorous approach to the entire research process, working in a highly independent way, supported by supervision from a Dissertation Supervisor. The module includes designing an empirical study with appropriate research aims and research questions, conducting an ethical review and conducting the data-collection, data-analysis, producing findings and recommendations for practice and / or further research. Students will develop an initial proposal for their dissertation research and then continue to develop their research and dissertation, supported by their supervisor.
