Program Overview


Magazine Journalism MA

The Magazine Journalism MA course is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to succeed in the magazine industry. This vocational course combines practical training in multimedia journalism with specialist industry knowledge and academic challenge.


About this Course

The course focuses on developing the skills to take an idea and turn it into a must-read piece of journalism, a great podcast, or compelling video content. Students will learn how to write and create content on the subjects they are passionate about, whether that means entertainment, politics, sport, fashion, literature, or another specialist area.


What You'll Study

This degree introduces students to the skills required to be a multiplatform journalist working in a converged and fully digital radio or television newsroom. The aim is to develop practical skills for broadcast news, current affairs, and factual programs with an awareness of and skills in digital, online journalism.


Module Information

The course includes the following core modules:


  • Magazine Practice: The most important skill for a magazine journalist is writing. In this module, students learn how to write clearly, concisely, and creatively.
  • Magazine Business and Innovation: This module explores how magazines work commercially and offers a chance to pitch a new brand idea to experts.
  • Social Media and Audience Analytics: Students explore social media's impact on journalism and society through critical discourse.
  • Media Law & Ethics: This module enters the world of media law to grasp its impact and scope.
  • Magazine Project: This module brings together the hands-on skills, industry insights, and entrepreneurial thinking developed throughout the program.

This course is accredited by the Professional Publishers Association. NTU is also part of the BAFTA Albert education partnership, and all Journalism courses at NTU are recognized by the European Journalism Training Association.


Entry Requirements

UK Students

  • Academic entry requirements: 2.1 honors degree and enthusiasm for, or experience of, journalism.
  • Applicants with a 2.2 and substantial experience will be considered.
  • All journalism applicants will be asked to submit a written piece as part of their application.

International Students

  • Academic entry requirements: 2.1 honors degree and enthusiasm for, or experience of, journalism.
  • We accept equivalent qualifications from all over the world.
