Introduction to the Program

The BSc Financial Mathematics (with Foundation Year) is a comprehensive undergraduate program designed to equip students with a broad knowledge of financial mathematics, accounting practice, and the wider business environment. This four-year full-time course includes a foundation year, which provides a solid introduction to mathematics and science, preparing students for the subsequent years of study.


Program Structure

  • The program consists of a foundation year, followed by three years of undergraduate study.

Core Modules

Year One

  • Introductory Mathematics: Essential mathematical ideas, including algebraic rearrangement, trigonometry, vectors, descriptive statistics, integration, and differentiation.
  • Intermediate Mathematics: Bridging the gap between introductory mathematics and degree-level mathematics, covering mathematical proof, algebra, geometry, vectors, and calculus.
  • Computational Mathematics: A hands-on introduction to mathematical and computational ideas, using software packages like Excel and Matlab.
  • Introduction to Programming: Learning to design, code, test, and debug basic Python language programs.

Year Two and Beyond

  • Calculus: Consolidating and extending previous knowledge of calculus, with an emphasis on underlying intuition and techniques.
  • Data Analysis: A practical approach to exploring key concepts in data analysis and statistics, using user-friendly statistical software.
  • Introduction to Linear Algebra and Computation: Studying linear algebra and its applications, with a focus on computational and numerical methods.
  • Introduction to Discrete Mathematics and its Applications: Investigating problems in discrete mathematics, working in groups to discover potential solutions and formalize them into algorithms.

Optional Modules

  • Linear Algebra and its Applications: Extending conceptual and technical background in linear algebra, introducing coding theory and its applications.
  • Cryptography and Computational Complexity: Selecting and applying appropriate techniques, using computer programming and specialist mathematical software to solve problems.
  • Corporate Financial Analysis: Critically analyzing company annual reports and accounts, identifying users of the reports, and developing skills to assess financial performance and health.
  • Financial Management: Assessing the value creation activity of organizations through investment and financing strategies, focusing on finance theories and their application in practice.

Assessment and Teaching

  • The course uses a mix of lectures, seminars, practical sessions, and workshops to deliver the curriculum.
  • Assessment types include coursework, practical assessments, exams, and tests, allowing students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in various ways.
  • Contact hours are approximately 40 hours per 20-credit module, with the remaining time allocated for independent study and research.

Entry Requirements

UK Students

  • Standard offer: 72 UCAS tariff points from three A-levels or equivalent.
  • Contextual offer: 64 UCAS tariff points from three A-levels or equivalent.
  • Other requirements: GCSE Maths grade B / 6 and English C / 4.

International Students

  • Academic entry requirements: 72 UCAS tariff points from three A-levels or equivalent, with equivalent qualifications accepted from around the world.
  • English language requirements: As specified by the University, with alternative tests and Pre-sessional English courses available.

Fees and Funding

UK Students

  • Ł9,790 per year, with reduced fees for placement years or study abroad.

International Students

  • Ł17,950 per year, with reduced fees for placement years or study abroad.
  • Scholarships of up to 50% of tuition fees are available for international students.
