Advanced Social Work Practice MA

The MA Advanced Social Work Practice is a flexible course that offers practicing social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, and people working in other health and social care-related professions, an integrated academic and professional qualification in practice.

Entry Requirements

• Applicants from allied health and social care disciplines may be eligible to apply for entry onto specific modules.
• For some of the modules, applicants must be qualified Social Workers and have current registration with Social Work England.
• You may also be required to demonstrate in your application that you have access to appropriate learning opportunities through your practice settings.

About this Course

The modular delivery of the course allows you to meet your learning needs at a time and pace that makes sense to you and will support your professional development throughout your career. You have the option to build credits towards the full Master's degree at your own pace, one module at a time. Alternatively, you can choose to study individual modules and graduate the programme with the interim awards of Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma.

What You'll Study

The modular framework of this course is designed to meet your learning at a time and pace that makes sense to your professional development. The course consists of single modules that you opt to study in order to support your Continuing Professional Development needs.

Modules

• Each module is worth 30 credit points and these points can be built up over time to gain postgraduate awards.
• The title of the awards will depend upon the PCF level of the modules completed (i.e., Social Worker level, Experienced Social Worker level, or Advanced Social Worker level).
• Modules include:
  • Consolidating the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment
  • Promoting Good Outcomes for Looked After Children Through Adoption
  • Practice Educator One
  • Practice Educator Two
  • Leading and Managing Social Work Services
  • Research Methods
  • Research Dissertation or Service Development Evaluation Project

Consolidating the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment

The module overview and aims are informed by the ASYE level descriptor in the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF).

Promoting Good Outcomes for Looked After Children Through Adoption

The overall aim of the module is to expose students to the wide variety of evidence and practice interventions that are aimed at promoting good outcomes for Looked After Children.

Practice Educator One

This module equips qualified social work practitioners with the necessary skills, values, and knowledge to become effective Practice Educators and meet the requirements of Stage 1 of the Practice Educator Professional Standards.

Practice Educator Two

This module builds on Practice Educator One, to enable qualified social work practitioners to supervise, teach, and assess social work students and meet the requirements for becoming a 'Stage Two Practice Educator' under the Practice Educator Professional Standards.

How You're Taught

We recognize that as professionals undergoing CPD education on a part-time basis, you have many competing demands on your time, and this has informed how we have structured the modules that you can take to complete the course, and the student support arrangements available to you.

Delivery Mode

Teaching is delivered both in person and online through a mixture of lectures, class discussions, group work activities, assignment surgeries, research, and critical reflection.

Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used, including essays, research and policy reviews, case study analysis, practice setting analysis, group and individual presentations, observations of practice, and a dissertation.

This course is not suitable for applicants who require a student visa.
