Introduction to the BA (Hons) Politics and International Relations Course

The BA (Hons) Politics and International Relations course is a comprehensive undergraduate program designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the complex and interconnected world of politics and international relations. This course combines the strengths of two separate disciplines, politics and international relations, into one exciting and interdisciplinary degree.

  • Year One: Provides the foundations of the discipline with core modules such as Politics, An Introduction to International Relations, British Politics and Beyond, Politics and International Relations in Practice, Media Power and Truth, and Study and Research Skills. Each module is worth 20 credits.
  • Year Two: Builds on the first year, with core modules like Global Political Marketing, Careers and Experience in Politics and International Relations, and Applied Social Research, alongside optional modules that allow students to specialize in areas of interest. Optional modules include Politics of Art, Film and Literature, Environmental Politics and Policy, Security Studies, Contemporary European Politics, Justice, Ethics, and Democracy, Understanding Foreign Policy, Global Politics of Post Colonialism, Global Political Economy of Everyday Life, UK Parliamentary Studies, and Foreign Language.
  • Optional Placement Year: Students can choose to undertake a year-long placement in the UK or overseas, supported by the Employability Team. This provides valuable work experience and enhances employability.
  • Year Three: Includes core modules such as Dissertation and Leadership, Activism, and Campaigning, with a range of optional modules to further specialize, including Political Violence and Terror, Global Politics of Pop Culture, Feminist Thought and Praxis, The International Relations of the Middle East and North Africa, British Politics in Uncertain Times, US Politics and Policy, Interpreting Contemporary Politics, Negotiating in International Contexts, Politics of the Global South, East of the West: Eurasian geopolitics, Emerging Powers of Asia, Globalisation in Crisis, and Spanish Politics.
  • University Language Programme: Offers students the opportunity to learn a new language or enhance existing language skills, with modules available in various languages.
  • Placement Year Support: The Employability Team provides extensive support in sourcing placements, which can be in the UK or abroad, offering students a wide range of experiences to prepare them for their future careers.
