Program Overview
Introduction:
Our Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) in Mathematics course will develop your mathematical knowledge to enable you to undertake a PGCE or School Direct Training Programme and train for a career in secondary Mathematics teaching.
This subject knowledge enhancement course is designed for graduates with a degree in a subject other than Mathematics who wish to train as secondary Mathematics teachers. The condition of entry is an offer of a place on an initial teacher training (ITT) course.
The full-time course (200 hours over seven weeks) is intended to support graduates as they develop their breadth and depth of mathematical knowledge before they begin an ITT course which would lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It is designed to support mathematical communication skills and the development of the subject knowledge required for teaching mathematics in secondary schools.
SKE courses are fully funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and you will receive a tax free bursary up to £200 per week for the duration of the course (subject to confirmation by DfE).
Program Outline
What you’ll study
This course is designed for those who have been offered a place on a PGCE or School Direct teacher training course and need to enhance their current subject knowledge.
It runs for 200 hours over an eight-week period. The course focuses on two aspects: subject knowledge and curriculum knowledge.
The subject knowledge part of the course will be tailored to each individual's needs. We recognise that you will be confident with certain areas of mathematics and will therefore devote our attention to the areas that you are more uncertain of.
Not only will the course equip you to perform Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 calculations yourself, you will start to become aware of what learners of each age group are expected to know, how this is sequenced, what barriers students might encounter and how to overcome these. You will be taught by experienced maths teachers who will share their own insight from the classroom and who draw on research to support their teaching.
The aim is to provide the breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding that you need to teach secondary mathematics confidently and competently.
11 - 16 SKE option
The curriculum is broadly based on the national programmes for study for KS3 and KS4, enabling you to teach the 11 - 16 curriculum with confidence.
How you’re taught
The course begins with a Subject Knowledge Audit to determine your current knowledge level and establish your areas that require further development. A final audit takes place at the end of your course to show your progress. Specialist tutors support your progression through the course content and set tasks, and are available to answer your questions throughout your studies.
These flexible courses are tailored to meet your experience and learning needs. Topics cover the National Curriculum at Key Stage 3 and 4 (and explore key stage 5), getting you up to speed before you begin your teacher training in September. Our SKE courses are short non-credit bearing courses, with a certificate awarded at the end of your course to provide to your training provider as proof of your successful completion.
Careers and employability
This course ais designed for graduates who wish to train to teach Maths as a secondary education subject, but do not have sufficient subject knowledge. To be eligible, you must already hold an offer of a place on a postgraduate teacher training course, and the provider offering that place must have made completion of the SKE course a condition of that offer.
Individuals who subsequently successfully complete their teacher training course will then be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status, and be ideally placed to pursue a career as a teacher in secondary schools or colleges.
