Program Overview

Introduction:

Learning a foreign language is a wonderful opportunity to not only learn the language itself, but also to reveal different perspectives on life, enabling you to explore new cultures through a different lens.

Our courses are more than just engaging classroom sessions supported by excellent online resources.

You’ll also have the option to take assessments and be awarded a Nottingham Trent University (NTU) Language Programme Certificate of Achievement.

If you continue to study with us, you may become eligible for a Certificate of Language Learning or Diploma of Language Learning (or the UNILANG Certificate).

You can find more details about these awards at www.ntu.ac.uk/ulp

Program Outline

What you’ll study

Our language classes are divided into Stages. Stage one is designed for real beginners whilst stage six and seven are for advanced learners. Check out the entry requirements to determine which stage is most appropriate for you. Some languages are available across levels in terms of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This allows students to work towards UNILANG recognition, which is highly recognised by employers. For more information, see our 'Awards' section.

To see which CEFR levels are taught at each ULP stage and find out more about CEFR, click here.

  • EFL stage 6

  • EFL stage 7

  • EFL stage 6 is the right stage for you if you are ready to start C1 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Topic areas are varied and typically include identity, cyberspace and ethical issues in tourism.

During the course, you will have the opportunity to study topics related to your own interests.

At the end of the course, you will be able, for example, to summarise extended written and spoken texts, as well as discuss and debate complex ideas.

By the end of stage 6, you should have reached the level of C1 in some skills in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

EFL stage 7 is the right stage for you if you have successfully completed EFL Stage 6 or Business English Stage 6 or have otherwise studied at level C1, but not completed it yet.

Speaking, reading, listening and writing skills are taught through society's contemporary topics such as human rights issues and inter-cultural communication.

You will study the use of informal and formal English language in various contexts such as writing an article for a newspaper or an essay incorporating various complex viewpoints.

At the end of the course, you will be able, for example, to give effective presentations and express complex ideas in debates and in essays.

By the end of stage 7, you should have reached the level of C1 in most skills in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
