Program Overview


Introduction:

Please note: This course is delivered through the Reskill & Recover project, which is part funded by the European Social Fund. Nottingham Trent University (NTU) is pleased to offer free (fully funded) places on this course to support employees of small and medium businesses that are based in Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire.

This course will guide you through selecting and using appropriate heritage materials in the repair, care, maintenance and upgrading of heritage buildings and assets.

It’s useful for anyone in the construction sector who’s looking to gain a better understanding of the challenges posed by listed, historic and older buildings.

Program Outline


What you’ll study

The course will introduce you to the legal framework in place in the UK to ensure that repairs are appropriate and proportionate, meeting the requirements of the local authority and Historic England.

You’ll look at how to apply retrofit technologies to meet the climate change challenges of the future without compromising the heritage aesthetic and character of our cities, towns and villages.

Teaching and learning will take place using a flexible programme of workshops, demonstrations, seminar groups and tutorials. It will enable you to increase your level of project engagement and productivity.

This course will be delivered via a combination of classroom sessions on the NTU City Campus and online sessions.


During this course you will:

  • be introduced to heritage buildings and conservation
  • identify, record and evaluate different architectural periods and styles within their social, economic and physical contexts
  • learn about the regulatory and legislative framework in the UK
  • develop an understanding of heritage construction techniques and materials
  • look at the sustainable reuse and adaptation of heritage buildings and assets
  • practise retrofitting for heritage buildings and assets.

  • As a result of completing the course, you will be able to demonstrate:

  • understand the main legal and practical constraints controlling works on historic buildings
  • be able to make informed decisions for selecting the most appropriate advice on the sympathetic maintenance, repair, conversion, conservation and retrofitting
  • have designed and specified appropriate upgrades to vernacular property, including choices for retrofit and enhancing energy performance
  • be confident in identifying differences in heritage construction techniques and materials
  • be able to interact effectively with both the owners of heritage buildings and those involved in carrying out the work
  • be able to demonstrate a range of transferable skills that be will valuable in the workplace.

  • What you’ll gain:

    You will receive a CPD certificate upon successful completion of the course. Should the assessment be successfully completed, the course provides 5 NTU undergraduate-level credits.
