Professional Certificate in Trade Mark Practice

The Professional Certificate in Trade Mark Practice (PCTMP) is a part-time course designed for trainee registered trade mark and designs attorneys. It is assessed by oral and written examinations.

About the Course

The PCTMP is a vocational course that focuses on the development of practical skills alongside work in the office. It is a "Professional Certificate" rather than a "Post Graduate Certificate," emphasizing the development of knowledge, understanding, and skills in professional and work-based practice.

Course Structure

The course is delivered over 10 months, usually beginning in October and ending in July the following year. It is built around intensive study units, usually running from Wednesday to Saturday, allowing work to be completed at a time convenient to the student.

Modules

The course consists of three modules:

• Introduction to UK & International Trade Mark Practice (20 credits)
• Litigation and Tribunal Practice (20 credits)
• Intellectual Property Litigation Certificate (20 credits)

Module Descriptions

Introduction to UK & International Trade Mark Practice

This module provides the foundation material in trade mark law and trade mark practice, focusing on advising clients both orally in interview and in letters.

Litigation and Tribunal Practice

This module builds on the non-contentious foundation provided in Module 1, introducing a contentious context and culminating in oral presentation skills.

Intellectual Property Litigation Certificate

This module completes the pre-registration training by focusing on the practice and procedure of conducting and advising upon litigation in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (IPEC) and embedding skills of professional and personal management relevant to practice.

Entry Requirements

UK Students

Applicants should normally have either:

• Successfully undertaken a course of study in trade mark law approved by the Intellectual Property Regulation Board (IPReg) and have employment in trade mark related practice.
• Equivalent qualifications or experience that will equip them to complete the course successfully, as determined by the programme leader and IPReg.

International Students

Applicants should normally have either:

• Successfully undertaken a course of study in trade mark law approved by IPReg and have employment in trade mark related practice.
• Equivalent qualifications or experience that will equip them to complete the course successfully, as determined by the programme leader and IPReg.
• English language entry requirements: IELTS test or alternative English language tests.
