Program Overview

The Education for Healthcare Professionals - PgCert program at Ulster University enhances healthcare professionals' development in education through interprofessional learning experiences. Delivered via blended learning, the program equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to effectively design and deliver learning activities within their practice settings, preparing them for various career opportunities in healthcare education and related fields.

Program Outline

The program primarily focuses on providing interprofessional learning experiences to enable healthcare professionals to facilitate learning and teaching within their practice environments.

The program is delivered through a blended learning approach incorporating both face-to-face sessions at Jordanstown and online learning.

The face-to-face sessions are primarily offered for commissioned/domestic applicants, while online delivery caters to students from further afield.

The curriculum consists of two modules:

  • Principles of Learning, Teaching and Assessment in Healthcare Practice
  • Learning and Teaching in Professional Practice
  • These modules aim to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to effectively design and deliver learning activities within their practice settings. They will gain a deeper understanding of the principles underpinning learning, teaching, and assessment, enabling them to engage in critical reflection and continuous improvement of their teaching practice.

Outline:

Module 1: Principles of Learning, Teaching and Assessment in Healthcare Practice

This module introduces the fundamental principles of learning, teaching, and assessment in healthcare practice. Students will explore the theoretical frameworks and practical strategies related to these principles. They will engage in peer review and self-assessment activities to refine their understanding and application of these concepts within their own practice contexts.

Module 2: Learning and Teaching in Professional Practice

Building on the foundational knowledge from the first module, this module delves deeper into specific techniques used in practice-based learning. It provides practical guidance on facilitating small group teaching, engaging in patient education, and teaching skills effectively. Students will have opportunities to design and deliver their bespoke teaching sessions, aligned with the specific needs of their professional environment. The program emphasizes the application of learning within the professional practice setting, enabling students to see the immediate relevance of the acquired knowledge and skills in their daily work.

Assessment:

The program utilizes a variety of assessment methods to evaluate student learning. These methods may include:

  • Essays
  • Presentations
  • Portfolios
  • Reflective journals
  • The assessments are designed to align with the learning outcomes of each module, focusing on the application of theoretical knowledge and practical skills within the professional context. Students will receive feedback on their assignments, enabling them to further refine their understanding and teaching practice.

Teaching:

The program utilizes a blend of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, and online learning activities. Experienced educators in healthcare, who are Senior Fellows of the HEA, deliver the curriculum. These educators bring a wealth of expertise and practical experience to the teaching environment. The program encourages self-reflection and critical thinking through individual and collaborative activities. Students are actively involved in their learning journey, engaging in discussions, peer feedback, and self-assessment.
