Program Overview
The University of Strathclyde offers a BA Hons Social Policy & Human Resource Management program. This program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of social policy and human resource management.
Program Structure
The program is a four-year course that allows students to study a range of subjects in the humanities and social sciences. Students can choose to study social policy and human resource management as a single or joint honors program.
Social Policy
Social policy examines the ways in which societies distribute resources and develop services to meet individual and social needs. The program covers key social policy issues, including poverty, inequality, social justice, health, education, and criminal justice.
Year 1
In the first year, students take a wide-ranging introduction to some of the key challenges facing Scottish society, including health, housing, education, and social security. They also explore how different issues come to be recognized and defined as 'social problems.
Year 2
In the second year, students deepen their knowledge and understanding of the historical development of social policy in Scotland. They also discover more about key concepts in social policy, including human needs, citizenship, and social exclusion.
Year 3
In the third year, students choose one optional class based on the specialism of a member of staff. They also take a class in research methodology, which helps them prepare for their final-year dissertation.
Year 4
In the final year, students take a core module on the global challenges facing social policy, focusing on issues such as inclusive growth, migration, and climate change. They can also take further optional specialist classes.
Human Resource Management
Human resource management covers areas such as recruitment and selection, training and developing, and managing conflict at work. The program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of human resource management.
Year 1
In the first year, students study the introductory class Managing People, which provides an overview of HRM.
Year 2 & 3
In the second and third years, students take core classes that cover more in-depth HRM theories and techniques.
Year 4
In the final year, students study a range of specialist classes, including Advanced Organisational Behaviour and HRM & Employment Relations in Public Services.
Assessment
Students are assessed using a variety of methods, including traditional essays and exams, as well as oral presentations, group work, and other forms of assessment.
Entry Requirements
The standard entry requirements for the program are:
- Highers: AAAA (first sitting) or AAAAB (second sitting)
- A Levels: ABB-BBB
- International Baccalaureate: 32-30
- Irish Leaving Certificate: Two H2 passes and three H3 passes, including English
