Introduction to the BA Hons Spanish & Hospitality and Tourism Management Program
The University of Strathclyde offers a comprehensive undergraduate program in Spanish & Hospitality and Tourism Management, providing students with a unique combination of language skills, cultural knowledge, and industry expertise. This four-year course is designed to equip students with the necessary skills to succeed in the hospitality and tourism sector, while also developing their proficiency in Spanish.
Program Structure
The program is structured to provide students with a broad foundation in Spanish language and culture, as well as a deep understanding of the hospitality and tourism industry. The course is divided into four years, with the first three years focusing on the development of language skills, cultural knowledge, and industry expertise. The final year is spent abroad, either studying at a foreign university or working as a language assistant or on a work placement.
Year 1
In the first year, students are introduced to the basic concepts of Spanish language and culture, as well as the fundamental principles of hospitality and tourism management. The core classes include:
- Spanish 1A: This course aims to bring students up to level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
- Spanish 1B: This course builds on the knowledge acquired in Spanish 1A and aims to bring students up to level A2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
- Introduction to Hospitality & Tourism Management: This class introduces students to key issues and concepts in relation to hospitality and tourism management.
Year 2
In the second year, students continue to develop their language skills and cultural knowledge, while also exploring the principles of hospitality and tourism management in more depth. The core classes include:
- Spanish 2A: This course introduces students to more complex and formal areas of language and aims to bring students up to level A2+/B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
- Spanish 2B: This course builds on the knowledge acquired in Spanish 2A and aims to bring students up to level B1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
- Service Encounter Management: This class explores the management of service encounters in the hospitality and tourism sector.
- Destination Marketing Management: This class examines the challenges of managing and marketing destinations across organizational and product boundaries.
Year 3
In the third year, students have the opportunity to put theory into practice by planning and executing a corporate, entertainment, or charitable event. The core classes include:
- Spanish 3A: This course consolidates students' knowledge and use of the Spanish language within an appropriate cultural context.
- Spanish 3B: This course focuses on two relevant topics, including the preparation for the year abroad.
- Industry Placement: Students have the opportunity to gain experience working with industry professionals and develop practical skills.
- Events Management: This class adds to the experiential content of the Hospitality & Tourism Management program while retaining rigorous theoretical underpinnings and strong coverage of events management at an advanced level.
Year 4
In the final year, students spend a year abroad, either studying at a foreign university or working as a language assistant or on a work placement. This year is compulsory to gain entry into Honours.

The assessment methods for the Spanish component of the program include:
- Written examinations, including translations
- Writing for a specific purpose

Entry Requirements
The standard entry requirements for the program are:
- Highers: AAAA (1st sitting) or AAAAB (2nd sitting)
- A Levels: ABB-BBB
- International Baccalaureate: 32-30
- Irish Leaving Certificate: Two H2 passes and three H3 passes, including English
- HNC: Year 1 entry, Social Sciences A in Graded Unit; Maths National 5 B, or equivalent
Fees and Funding
The tuition fees for the program are:
- Scotland: £1,820
- England, Wales & Northern Ireland: £9,535
- Republic of Ireland: If you are an Irish citizen and have been ordinary resident in the Republic of Ireland for the three years prior to the relevant date, and will be coming to Scotland for Educational purposes only, you will meet the criteria of England, Wales & Northern Ireland fee status.
