Program Overview
MSc Sustainable Engineering: Marine Technology
The MSc Sustainable Engineering: Marine Technology program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of sustainable engineering principles and their application in the marine technology sector. This cross-disciplinary program combines study in specialist, advanced engineering technologies with training in sustainability, ensuring that graduates are equipped to develop innovative solutions to real-world problems.
Why this course?
This flexible program is ideal for experienced or newly-qualified engineers in naval architecture, marine engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, or related disciplines. The course is designed to provide students with a solid understanding of modern, sustainable engineering and its application in marine technology. Students will gain key transferable skills to aid their employability and develop a sought-after understanding of sustainable approaches and practices.
Course content
The program covers a range of topics, including:
- Autonomous Marine Vehicles & Digital Twin: This module aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to model, simulate, and analyze the complex non-linear behavior of autonomous marine vehicles using MATLAB/Simulink.
- Onboard Energy Management & Marine Environment Protection: This module aims to provide students with knowledge and awareness of issues in marine environmental protection, environmentally-friendly shipping, and international conventions and regulations of environmental protection.
- Maritime Safety & Risk: This module aims to demonstrate how the principles and methods of risk analysis are undertaken and reflected in safety assessment.
- Advanced Marine Structures: This module aims to provide students with an understanding of the response of surface ships, at both a global and a local level.
- Sustainability: This class aims to provide students with an understanding of the concepts of sustainability and sustainable development.
- Design & Construction of Floating, Production, Storage & Offloading Vessels: This module aims to introduce the shipbuilding technologies and equipment used in the construction of FPSO vessels.
- Design Management: This class provides a structured introduction to the design management process, issues, and tools.
- Risk Management: This module explores the entire process of structuring a risk problem, modeling it, supporting and communicating recommendations, both theoretically and in practice.
- Financial Engineering: The class aims to introduce elements of financial engineering that are applied to reduce the risk of business insolvency and enhance the financial robustness of business enterprises.
- Environmental Impact Assessment: This class aims to provide students with an introduction to some of the methods used to predict environmental impacts and to see how these may be used to integrate environmental factors into decisions.
Learning & teaching
The program is delivered in the form of formal lectures supported with tutorials and laboratory experiments when needed. Students are required to attend an induction prior to the start of the course.
Assessment
There are two types of method for module assessment: coursework assessment only and examination assessment. For examined modules, the final assessment mark consists of 30-40% coursework and 60-70% examination.
Entry requirements
- Academic requirements/experience: Normally a first-class or second-class honors degree (or international equivalent) in architecture, engineering, or a related subject.
- English language requirements: If English is not the first language, please visit the English language requirements page for full details of the requirements in place before making an application.
Fees & funding
- Scotland: £10,800 (2024/25), £11,900 (2025/26)
