Course overview

Learn how to process and analyse data, install packages for functionality and make high-quality graphics using R, a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics.

Really good - well run and very interesting and informative. Tutor very helpful and solved many issues!

Helen Pine

Incredibly useful course. A good pace throughout the week. A clear structure to what we were doing. Practicals and recaps were great to consolidate knowledge.

Elsie Lauchlan

    Get hands-on experience

Designed for beginners, our week-long course offers you a hands-on introduction to R software, an open-source software environment, focusing on practical areas of data analysis.

R is quickly becoming the go-to tool for data scientists and programmers as well as being at the forefront of developments in statistical computing. Understanding the foundations of R’s functionality can benefit people across many different fields.

Throughout your course at Goldsmiths, you’ll learn about:

  • Data analysis, reading in data, data exploration and filtering
  • Vectors, arithmetic, recycling
  • Graphics and advanced graphics
  • Analysis workflow
  • Making your own functions
  • Linear modelling
  • Object-orientated programming
  • Principal component analysis
  • On this course, we want to give you as much practical experience as possible so you’ll experience a range of different teaching and learning methods. These will include lectures, active participation in tutorials, practical sessions, debates and discussions. You’ll also receive academic guidance and feedback throughout the course.

On your final day, you’ll build a predictive model based on real data about the factors that predict survival on the Titanic and/or the factors that predict childhood bullying. This will involve real datasets that will require you to perform different skills you’ve learnt throughout the week, to demonstrate your ability to handle and gain insight from large and unfamiliar datasets.

By the end of the week, you’ll understand and be ready to use R’s fundamental techniques. For example, how to read a variety of different types of datasets, as well as “cleaning” and restructuring it to make it more useful for you. You’ll also have created publication-quality graphics and know how to apply different models onto different types of datasets.
