Overview

This BA in Film, TV and Screen Media Production program aims to equip learners with the essential knowledge and practical and technical skills needed to express their creativity and develop their abilities to work in the dynamic film, TV, and screen media industries. The program takes a practical approach with an emphasis on active learning and implementation of industry-standard processes, all underpinned by a theoretical and contextual framework. Learners will be equipped to work in both live TV broadcast environments and location-based film, TV, and online content production. The program prepares graduates to adapt to evolving industry needs by developing their industry awareness, creativity, concept development, understanding of history and theory, storytelling skills, proficiency in industry-standard software, and ability to work both individually and as part of a group.

Objectives

The program aims to:

Develop learners' essential knowledge and practical and technical skills for the film, TV, and screen media industries.
Equip learners to work in both live TV broadcast environments and location-based film, TV, and online content production.
Prepare learners to adapt to evolving industry needs.
Enhance learners' industry awareness, creativity, concept development, understanding of history and theory, storytelling skills, proficiency in industry-standard software, and ability to work both individually and as part of a group.
Provide full access to industry-standard equipment and facilities.
The program includes a fully equipped TV studio, digital cinematography equipment, access to Avid Media Composer, ProTools and Adobe Suite, on location sound recording equipment, access to production spaces, and direct connections with the film industry.
Previous guest lecturers include professionals from Disney Distribution, Universal Pictures, and other renowned organizations.

Outline

Year One

Creative Studio Projects 1: Enables students to develop original images, observe, record, and respond, exploring art, design, and screen media practices.
Writing for Screen: Demystifies the writing process, focusing on clarity, coherence, and detail, and introduces research and presentation skills for developing compelling stories.
Screen Production 1: Focuses on current industry best practice in short-form screen media content production, emulating industry processes to equip students with the basic practical skills to produce short-form audio-visual branded/commercial content for multi-platform distribution.
Presentation and TV Studio Basics: Provides fundamental skills vital to presenting and connecting with audiences in both on and off-camera settings.
Creative Studio Projects 2: Students understand the importance of contextual references, apply knowledge and experience to solve problems, independently select media, and present a final major project and portfolio of work.
Storytelling for Screen: Explores the universal principles of story and story structure in various modes, formats, and genres of screen media production.
Screen Production 2: Equips students with the ability to produce engaging, coherent fiction ideas and follow industry-standard workflows and processes through all stages of film and screen media production cycle.
Visual Culture and Theory: Compares and contrasts different historical periods and styles in art and design, understanding their evolution through time.

Year Two

Production and Direction for Screen: Equips students to conceive strong, compelling narrative fiction and non-fiction ideas and develop original material through all stages of film and media production process.
TV Studios Principles: Introduces learners to fundamental production technologies in a multi-camera TV studio setting.
Writing for Screen: Addresses the narrative requirements of story, genre, structure, character, and dialogue, culminating in students generating and writing short dramatic scenes for the Production and Direction for Screen module in semester two of the programme.
Film and TV History: Introduces seminal movements within the historical evolution of Irish, European, and American cinema and TV, equipping learners with a critical and contextual framework to deconstruct, analyze, and discuss the origins and evolutions of screen content.
Screen Culture and Theory: Provides students with the fundamental concepts and skills necessary to analyze film, TV, and other audiovisual media forms.

Year Three

Visual Storytelling and Direction for Screen: Encourages students to work independently on two-minute non-fiction documentary projects and collaboratively to bring several short films (fiction and non-fiction) through various stages of pre-production, production/filming, and post-production.
Screen Production Management: Provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to produce content for screen, covering key production concepts and practices required in the production environment, film, TV, and screen production principles, and roles, and the nature and scope of the production department and its role in successful production strategies.
TV Studio Practice: Introduces fundamental production technologies in a multi-camera TV studio setting.
Contemporary Audiovisual Culture: Builds upon the theoretical frameworks encountered at stage one of this programme and applies them in the context of contemporary culture and the implications of ubiquitous screens.
Advanced Cinematography: Builds on cinematographic learning outcomes from stage one to develop advanced competency and skills in camera operation, lighting design, and critical and creative analysis of the role of cinematography within productions.
Sound Recording and Production 2: Builds on the audio recording skills and practices acquired in stage one, introducing more advanced practices, techniques, and equipment in location sound recording.
Editing and Post-Production 2: Expands students' editing abilities, technical skills, and creative engagement through the study of the craft of editing, taking examples from both fiction and non-fiction.
