Program Overview
Overview
Sport and exercise psychology is a relatively new and increasingly popular area of applied psychology within the UK.
The DPsych Sport and Exercise Psychology course is the only one of its kind in Scotland, with a strong focus on developing outstanding therapeutic skills, inter-disciplinary learning, teaching and research.
Sport and exercise psychologists work in all areas of sport and exercise provision, especially professional and Olympic sports and increasing physical activity and exercise participation amongst the general population.
They represent a trusted and dependable structure within sports science provision at local, national and Olympic-level sport and across structures in professional football, rugby, golf and the national sports institutes (Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and England).
Sport and exercise psychologists draw upon psychological theory and research, applying them to prevent illness and injury, to promote the highest standards of performance and wellbeing, and increase exercise participation and motivation for all.

Assessment methods
Assessment requirements vary according to module. The course as a whole makes use of essays, oral presentations, examinations, case studies, critical appraisals and research dissertations.
Part-time study
Following Year 1 of the course, students can change their route of study, if desired, to suit life circumstances. For example, a student may wish to undertake Stage Two over two years and may apply to change to the part-time route for that period, reverting to full-time study (if they wish) in Stage Three.
Professional accreditation
The course is approved as meeting the standards for education of the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), which is the regulator of Practitioner Psychologists in the UK. It is therefore an approved route towards obtaining registration with the HCPC as a Sport and Exercise Psychologist.
The course is also accredited by the British Psychological Society as a doctoral training provider for Sport and Exercise Psychology.
Route to chartered status
Students receiving the D.Psych in Sport and Exercise Psychology are eligible to apply for Chartership as a Sport and Exercise Psychologist.
Why choose this course?
The course is part of Glasgow Caledonian’s Applied Psychology Doctoral Framework, which also comprises the taught doctorate programmes in Counselling Psychology and Health Psychology. Given the high proportion of shared HCPC/BPS competencies among all practitioner psychologists (>80%), they share a substantial amount of teaching across the three programmes, bringing a breadth of perspective and awareness to your study.
Work experience
Students must undertake a minimum of 450 hours of supervised clinical practice work during the course. This practicum placement is conducted through at least three work placements in sport and exercise settings, such as third-sector and independent-sector placements. Placement practice starts a few months into Year 1 and continues throughout the course, usually for two days per week.
