Overview of the LLB (Hons) Law with Criminology with Integrated Foundation Year

The LLB (Hons) Law with Criminology with Integrated Foundation Year is a four-year course that includes an introductory foundation year. This year develops academic skills and confidence, providing an overview of core aspects of law. The course is suitable for those who have previously studied law, but previous study is not required.

The Course Structure

• The foundation year develops academic skills and introduces the English legal system, global law, public law, and the law of obligations.
• The subsequent years cover the seven core foundations of legal knowledge, including criminal law, contract law, tort law, EU law, public law, land law, and equity and trusts.
• Students also explore criminology, examining the psychology of criminals and the investigative element of understanding crime.
• Optional modules are available, including history of criminology, understanding the criminal mind, cybercrime and security, international environmental law, and sexual offending.

Teaching and Assessment

• Teaching sessions are interactive and include case analysis, interpretation of statutes, debates, and discussions on every core aspect of English law.
• Assessment methods include coursework, mock trials, presentations, academic posters, mock client interviews, and negotiations.
• None of the modules are 100% exams, but rather a blend of these assessment methods.

Experience and Professional Opportunities

• Students have the opportunity to gain vital workplace experience within a law setting.
• The course provides a range of extra-curricular opportunities, including pro bono work, mediation, work experience in a law firm or mini pupillage, participating in mooting competitions, client interviewing competitions, or contributing to the University of Chichester Student Law Review.

Preparation for SQE

• The course provides dedicated support for the new postgraduate examinations for solicitors, known as the Solicitors Qualifying Examinations (SQE 1 and SQE 2).
• Students are supported in preparing for the first of the Solicitor's Qualifying Examinations, which can be taken after completing the degree.

Work Placements

• Students have the opportunity to undertake a work placement that gives vital real-world experience of working within the law profession.
• Placements can be taken at a local law firm, an in-house legal department of a large company, Citizen's Advice, or at a local authority.

Study Abroad

• The University of Chichester offers opportunities to study abroad during the course, allowing students to broaden their horizons, meet new people, and immerse themselves in a new culture.

Careers

• The course allows students to work towards becoming a solicitor or barrister.
• Other career paths include paralegal, legal secretaries, in-house lawyers, human resources, local and national government, civil services, teaching, criminologist, police officer, forensic science technician, and probation manager.

Course Costs

• The UK fee for the foundation year is £5,760, and £9,790 per year for years 1, 2, and 3.
• The international fee is £16,800.
• An EU/EEA Fee Reduction Scholarship is available, which automatically reduces the fee for EU/EEA students to the equivalent of UK fees.

Entry Requirements

• The typical offer is 48 UCAS tariff points or a pass in Legal Services (T Level).
• IELTS 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in writing or equivalent if English is not the first language.
