Course essentials

This course will allow you to develop and demonstrate your extended knowledge, understanding and advanced skills in the treatment of patients who require prosthetic facial rehabilitation. You will study and practice a broad range of treatments for the replacement of missing hard and soft tissues, using both traditional and advanced digital technologies. The course includes:

• Facial prosthetics, implantology, ocular prosthetics, treatment planning and prosthesis design, advanced prosthodontics (obturators).
• Digital technology, colour science, medical emergencies, cross infection control and care of medically/clinically compromised patients.
• Biomaterials science, craniofacial implants, silicone elastomers and gels, tissue engineering and bone substitutes, biocompatibility.
• Psychology of managing terminally ill patients, counselling skills and forming integrated care plans, extra/intra oral implantology.

Delivered primarily online, the course also provides 20 days* of intensive face-to-face teaching and practical training at Rangoonwala College of Dental Sciences and Research Centre, Pune, India. Under expert supervision, these blocks are an invaluable way to consolidate learning and progress through to the final year. *The face-to-face component takes place for nine consecutive days in Year 1 and 11 consecutive days in Year 2.

Programme-Specific Requirements

UK applicants will be expected to have a diploma in Professional Studies (Maxillofacial Prosthetics & Technology) or a degree in Dental Technology with at least two years post-qualification technical experience.

Access to facilities and equipment

• Adequate clinical facilities and access to patients requiring treatment relevant to your subject area.
• Approved photography equipment, as part of the monitoring process (advice on this will be given in the first intensive face-to-face teaching block).

Other requirements:

• Headset, microphone and webcam
• High quality internet connection for tutorials with minimum speeds of 2Mbps down and 3Mbps up
• Javascript must be enabled.

International applicants

Equivalent International qualifications

International applicants are required to have a Dental degree from a recognised institution. The recognised status of an institution will be assessed after submission of an application.

English language requirements

English language band: D

To study at King's, it is essential that you can communicate in English effectively in an academic environment. You are usually required to provide certification of your competence in English before starting your studies.

Nationals of majority English speaking countries (as defined by the UKVI) who have permanently resided in this country are not usually required to complete an additional English language test. This is also the case for applicants who have successfully completed an undergraduate degree (of at least three years duration), a postgraduate taught degree (of at least one year), or a PhD in a majority English speaking country (as defined by the UKVI) within five years of the course start date.

Selection process

Applications must be made online by 20 November 2024 (23:59 UK time) using the King’s application portal apply.kcl.ac.uk

A non-refundable application fee of £75 applies.

Completed applications (consisting of an online application form, one reference, transcripts of previous qualifications and evidence of English Language score where required) will be considered on a first-come first-served basis according to the date of completion of the application. Early applications are strongly advised.

Please note that all documents (degree certificates and English Language test results) must be provided by the final deadline of 20 November.

Candidates who are required to provide evidence of English Language competence at Band D level (for example IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each skill) should ensure that they can provide this by the deadline in their offer letter.

The initial decision will be to either confirm the offer of a place without an interview, invite you for an interview, or make the application unsuccessful. We may run a waiting list with competitive applications placed on hold if there are more applications than spaces available.

You should expect to receive this initial decision within six weeks of the date of submission of the completed application, although this may be slightly longer at peak periods near to the closing date. Applicants who are offered a place will have to provide original documentary evidence of their previous qualifications, and pay a non-refundable deposit, before access to the online virtual learning environment will be given at the start of your course.

  • You should describe how the degree will fit into your career plan and demonstrate a focused interest in the programme. You should also confirm that you have read the computing specification required to commence the programme, which can be viewed in the entry requirements section and provide details of your access to:
    • Adequate clinical facilities and an appropriate selection of patients;
    • Approved video equipment, as part of the communication process (advice on this will be given in the first intensive face-to-face teaching block);
    • An appropriate dental library.

  • A copy (or copies) of your official academic transcript(s), showing the subjects studied and marks obtained. If you have already completed your degree, copies of your official degree certificate will also be required. Applicants with academic documents issued in a language other than English, will need to submit both the original and official translation of their documents.

  • One academic reference is required. A professional reference will be accepted if you have completed your qualifications over five years ago.

You will be taught mostly online through King’s E-learning and Teaching Service (KEATS) which provides information, interactive questions, assignments, use of bibliographic databases and reading material. Our students participate in online tutorials and discussion groups, interacting with expert tutors and their fellow students. Face-to-face lectures and hands-on training take place in blocks in the first two years. Students are required to undertake and submit four cases of clinical work in their place of work.

Students are required to have access to adequate clinical facilities and to patients requiring treatment relevant to the subject area.

The face-to-face component normally takes place for nine consecutive days in Year 1 and 11 consecutive days in Year 2 at Rangoonwala College of Dental Sciences and Research Centre, Pune, India.

The provision of any clinical opinions, treatment planning, treatment plans and/or any advice in relation to care of individual patients will not be provided by the teachers and staff of the course. Patient treatment and care is the sole responsibility of the treating clinician. Advice regarding the suitability of a clinical case for submission for the clinical module can be given at the tutor’s discretion.

Assessment

Your performance will be assessed through a combination of coursework and written examinations. Forms of assessment may typically include written assignments and clinical case reports.

A combination of coursework and examinations typically determine your final mark with the exception of the Patient Management, Research Methods and Clinical Practice modules which are assessed entirely through coursework, and the Maxillofacial Prosthetic Rehabilitation Research Report module which is assessed on a dissertation.

The study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect. However, they are subject to change.

This MSc will provide you with the necessary knowledge and tools to work as a maxillofacial prosthetist in a recognized maxillofacial centre in the UK and overseas.

Fees & Funding

Tuition Fees

• UK: Part time: £11,205 per year
• International: Part time: £11,205 per year

These tuition fees may be subject to additional increases in subsequent years of study, in line with King’s terms and conditions.

Deposit

When you receive an offer for this course you will be required to pay a non-refundable deposit of £1,000 to secure your place. The deposit will be credited towards your total fee payment.

• If you receive an offer before 31 May, payment is due by 30 June 2024.
• If you receive an offer between 1 June and 30 August, payment is due within one month of receiving the offer.
• If you receive an offer between 1 September and 31 October, payment is due within two weeks of receiving the offer.
• If you receive an offer between 1 November and 30 November, payment is due within one week from the offer date.
• If you receive an offer from 1 December, payment is due within three days from the offer date.

Additional Costs

In addition to your tuition costs, you can also expect to pay for:

• Travel, accommodation and subsistence for the face-to-face training blocks in India during years 1 and 2.
• Internet access and high quality internet connection for tutorials with minimum speeds of 2Mbps down and 3Mbps up.
• Computer equipment including headset, microphone and webcam.
• Photography equipment (to be discussed further at enrolment): digital camera with a macro lens and ring flash; SD card; retractors and mirrors; photo editing software.
• Since this is a clinical skills programme the majority of students find that they benefit from use of clinical operating loupes with or without headlamp illumination in order to facilitate their clinical development.
• Books if you choose to buy your own copies.

Students will also be expected to bear any costs relating to providing clinical treatment for the clinical cases required for the course. Access to reasonable and compliant equipment and materials will be expected.
